Rip in peace, watch 10/10 older movies like the dead poet society and good will hunting. Or get a life. Either works.

Op here. Yes, I've seen all of those movies.

Yeah. And you missed out on life. That is why you got the feels.
Go get some exercise. Talk to people. And don't let your self-worth depend upon flickering screens. If you have a sense of loss, if life seems empty after running out of movies to watch, then you fucked up and finding more movies to watch is not the way to go.

>>767351777
Traffic was way overrated. You list seems like it was pulled off of a "top movies loved by hipsters" list on Ranker
>>767352021
These are all movies I own, have watched multiple times, and love.
Traffic was a great, gritty drama. Some aspects of it were a little preachy, but it still gave me a good shot in the gut.
>>767351938
So OP is a fraud.

Have you seen Harold Lloyd in "Safety Last"?
I began watching silent films a few years ago and was very impressed. Movies like "The Crowd", "The Thief of Baghdad", "Greed", "The General", etc really amazed me.

What separates great films from "reddit" films. Would love to hear an articulation of this. I've acquired these films over 8-10 years without any influence from reddit.
>>767350536
Straw Dogs
The Filth and the Fury
The Sweet Smell of Success
Sherlock Jr.
La Jetée
>>767353119
Name some great films in your opinion. Really.
>>767353213
I'm not him but they're all very accessible films
Which doesn't couple with your condescending tone very well
If you want a genuine reply, you should explore actors, directors, and writers you figured out you like from watching all the good movies
>>767353213
Not anon, but I can answer.
It's the same movies every fucking 17 year old "indie kid" watches and then circle jerks with their "indie" friends discussing them while they feel an undeserved sense of superiority.
It's the same people who flock to Reddit.
These films are relatively good, but they are entry level hipster trash compared to real cinema.
>>767353213

>>767353360
>accessible films
As if that's a criticism. I love Jack Nicholson, John Houston, and Woody Allen. Each of the films in my list is a solid film in its own right with no qualifiers.
>>767353293
A bright guy like you should be able to find my list on this thread, champ. ;)
>>767353496
This
have you seen Melancholia?
>>767353213
For me
Fargo was okay, but I was pissed to discover it was not really a true story, NCFOM was actually better than the book in my opinion, Psycho is excellent - but I liked Hitchcock's Rear Window, Vertigo and The Lady Vanishes better. Nosferatu is brilliant, Chinatown still gives me chills (like Eyes Wide Shut), Maltese Falcon is marvelous, though I prefer The Big Sleep. Easy Rider is not my cup of tea, Goodfellas is a masterpiece - with incredible re-watch value, La Dolce Vita is my favorite Fellini along with La Strada, Sunset Blvd is decent, but I do not like William Holden. The Asphalt Jungle was very atmospheric, Blazing Saddles is rather childish and stupid, Manhattan - ehh. Annie Hall and Broadway Danny Rose did more for me, but I don't like Woody Allen - he's a pseud.
Haven't seen Traffic or Five Easy Pieces.
>>767353496
I've watched non-Hollywood films, and liked them, but they're hard to find on DVD. And frankly, the films I enjoyed that aren't mainstream aren't as well-written as the masterpieces I listed. They either have a great script OR great acting OR great visuals. Never all three.
Chinatown, for example, has all three.
No Country for Old Men has all three.
Easy Rider has all three.
La Dolce Vita has all three.
I mean, I can't even believe I sparked an argument here. I feel like each of the movies I listed are genuine masterpieces.
Have you seen one flew over the cuckoo's nest? Maybe OP will fit right in
>>767353285
I have La Jetée but haven't seen it yet. Should get around to it.
>>767353648
With the exception of Easy Rider, Blazing Saddles, Manhattan, and the films you haven't seen, you approve of every film on my list. I think that tells you that they're high-quality movies.
>>767353660

>>767353804
I liked it, and it was well-acted with a great script. But it had a strange comedic tone to it that I didn't quite appreciate. It kind of reminded me of Giant, but with a little too much self-awareness.
Don't get me wrong, I still loved it. But No Country for Old Men is the superior film from that year.
>>767353840
A great film as well. I have/had it on DVD but it got badly scratched.
>>767353798
They are. Few will deny that they are all great/influential films.
>>767350735

>>767353660
You're a hack. Your understanding of the art is clearly limited to the 11 minute synopsis videos on YouTube every other hack watches. Not a single film on your list hasn't been praised highly by every kid named Spencer while waiting for AP Biology to begin.
I'm sure this elementary dribble works well with the alt-sluts at your school, but do yourself a favor- don't play cinema expert to anyone who actually appreciates the craft. You'll come off as a seasoned jackass.

My friend literally torrented most of the titles in "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die". There were 6 or 7 too obscure to find. We watched them all over a period of about 3 years. Good times.
>grapes of wrath
Anyone watched the film? Good adaptation of the book?
>>767353545
It isn't your list. It's a collection of movies that you like.
It isn't like those movies become great merely because you liked them.
>>767353943
Haven't seen Blade Runner or Lawrence of Arabia, but Apocalypse Now is a great movie too. I leant it to a friend seven years ago and never got it back.
>>767353970
You're obviously still in the phase where you think anything Hollywood-produced must be shit.
I've gone through the European indie-film phase, enjoyed it, learned from it. And if you want me to throw some of those films into my list, I can. But "Oh, Boy", "Fucking Amal," and "Festen" have pros and cons too. They aren't absolute masterpieces either.
>>767353899
I can respect that, I felt like it couldn't have portrayed someone's compete deterioration any better, but No Country For Old Men better..... I can't chose between the two, they're both favorites
>>767353993
Haha I appreciate the backup, anon
>>767353943
Ah yes - Lawrence of Arabia. One of my favorites. So many kino moments. The blowing out of the match cut to the sun rising over the desert, the walking over the train, the massacre of the wounded Turks

Ah. Peter O'Toole deserved the Oscar that year - but lost to Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird.

It hasn't aged well - I don't know, I would want to see a modern adaptation, but it would have to be a dark neo-noir Western kind of movie, like Unforgiven or The Assassination of Jessie James but just in visual style and tone

It is nothing compared to earlier prison films such as "I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang" and the French film "A Man Escaped".
For specific faults I would say the plot is too contrived, cliche character types (the evil warden who is a hypocrite Christian, the inhuman brute guard, the worldy-wise older prisoner, the young kid who went down the wrong path, etc.
>>767355076

>>767355181
I think the character types were great - hypocrisy and Christians go hand-in-hand back then just as much as they did today, for that one instance of him beating the guy to death he was actually capable of being reasonable, I don't think the world-wise prisoner is so much a cliche as it is a status you attain, I know there has to be more than a few guys like that in prisons and the kid wasn't completely bad, he was just a rebel-rouser and petty criminal that I felt like was a personification of that freewheeling rock n' roll culture of the late-50's and into the 60's

The only reason i say forever is worse is because it ruined what would have been a good trilogy of films, also jim carrey, timmy lee jones, chris o donnel, and kilmer a some of the worst people too ever appear in a comic book movie. Batman and robin isnt "worse" because there was nothjng left too ruin. Both films are garbage but forever tanked a franchise

Hypocrisy and Christians go hand in hand (very clumsily phrased but never mind...) because Christianity gives high moral standards, and when people preach these and don't live according to them, they can be called hypocrites; obviously, contemporary degenerates are also hypocrites, although not in that sense

Sorry to delve into theology here, but Christianity does not really give high moral standards. Jesus spoke his "impossible" sermons to the hypocrite Jews of the day, who were ignoring most of Moses' laws while boasting about keeping others. They do not apply to Christians, who are saved by faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Unfortunately, most Christians do not know this, and foolishly try to follow commandments not meant for them. Apostles like Paul recommended Christians act well and behave - but that was more for the sake of peace and propriety. All that is needed for Christianity is faith in Christ. That is all. The thief crucified next to Jesus simply said "remember me" and that was enough for Christ to promise him paradise.

It goes awry, only Lloyd gets out alive and he creates a time machine to save Billy and McNulty. It’s called cuckoo 2: electric timeskew
>>767356227
This guy dropping knowledge on you heathens.
Good job, bro
>>767356227
Your theology is protestant, and contrary to what was believed for centuries in the Church, and still is in the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. The only thing you've shown is that not all branches of Christianity demand high moral standards, but we already knew that. In addition, salvation by faith does not mean works are superfluous, or even wicked, as Luther sometimes said; indeed, without works, faith is dead
>>767356331
No, this guy is just a pretty radical protestant; obviously enough, Jesus never said the commandments were impossible
>>767356472
Well, no; protestant theology at its most radical and exclusively faith-based; one does not have to be a heathen to contest such a view, indeed the largest Christian denomination in the world does
