Is the acting supposed to be completely horrendous across the board? Like, is that part of the "campy appeal" of Star Trek and it's just going over my head?
>>
>>746187483
Both.
>>
too bad the rest of show is only available on CBS all access.
>>
>>746186918
Just finished the second episode.

Really appreciated the inclusion of the 40k universe.

Didn't really appreciate how that stupid fucking actress Ching-Ching Bing couldn't hold a prop gun steady and well enough to not look like a fucking idiot.

Didn't appreciate how everyone keeps passing the idiot ball around. Even when they pass it to themselves.

I did like how I'm-Not-A-Man-But-My-Name-Is Michael outwitted the ships computer.

I've always had a boner for Space Navy combat between ships. So this idea of Star-Trek: The War Years gives me a bigger boner than that sweet black bitch, Michael.

I'll give it a B. I'll watch next week.
>>
>>746187483
also is the black chick supposed to be a boy or is my skin color preventing me from understanding the chinese captain because im racist?
>>
>>746188907
her name is michael?

how deliciously progressive
>>
>>746188930
I...think it's supposed to be a woman. And has always been. They refer to her as She in the show.

Not really clear why she has the name Michael. If it was a tranny that wanted to transition either way, you'd think it would change its name to something that matches.
>>
>>746187483
I dunno if it's terrible across the board but Michelle Yeoh's performance is unwatchable.
>>
>>746188955
I'd still fuck her into unconsciousness. The actress at least, since I know she's a woman. If her character is a dude that got his dick chopped off, then I'll have to strong pass.

I don't give a shit about STD, I just want ensign Daft-Punk to get her own show.
I want to watch her origins as a cyborg. How she is taken in by the federation. How she awkwardly lives at Starfleet Academy and interacts with her organic peers. I want to see her slowly showing emotions, flashing on her face-screens.

They can go shove their KANGZons and Commander Bix-Nood, just give me more Cyborg-fu.

It's supposed to be indicative of how name assignments change over the centuries I guess. Like how there could be names like Spider Jerusalem or Desolation Williams. In this case I think the writers were recalling how names like Meredith started as exclusively male names and gradually became more associated with women. Or like Sam or Jamie that are basically unisex.

Looked great, was what you would expect from TV Trek.

Does what it says on the tin, CBS presents a Star Trek television show. They're on target.

/b/ wants it to fail. It's nothing worth celebrating, but it's nothing worth calling the whole thing off on.

/pol/ here.

Much better than I thought it was going to be.

Couple of thoughts....

1. Around Blacks Never Relax. Seriously.

2. Two women can't decide what to do, one women attacks the other women. Uh......

3. Who is rooting against the Klingon's?

4. Life in prison for mutiny and attacking a fellow officer? In the "progressive" world? Vulcan's live for 200+ years.

5. They finally used the "why don't we use the transporter to transport a bomb" tactic. Great, I wonder if they will use this tactic again?

Honestly, who is rooting against the Klingon's?
>>
As soon as I found out it was exclusive to CBS All Access I dropped it so hard, and I wasn't that into it in the first place. More like Star Trek: DOA.
>>
Well that was fucking stupid. Guess I'll watch fucking Orville, Orville is a really shitty Star Trek show, but at least it's Star Trek.

Nobody takes /b/ memes seriously, it's a simple formula. If it looks promising, it's shit. If it looks like it might get cancelled, it's worth fighting for. If it's remembered for being hated, it might get a revised interpretation (see SW prequels). If it's something that's stayed mostly obscure for long enough, you might finally get an honest opinion. Like how everyone basically agrees now that Elementary > Sherlock.

>Honestly, who is rooting against the Klingon's?
The writers made it clear early on that they wanted the Klingon outlook of individualism and conflict being preferable to collectivism and harmony wouldn't be judged as wrong, just a different way of living. They wanted to show what happens when ideologies collide, not one eventually proving to be better.
>>

They'll reverse course on that shit in a heartbeat if they don't like the numbers they pulled at the end of the season but are getting middling or better reviews.

CBS is not in imminent danger of losing their place among the major networks because of this or anything. Corporate television doesn't work like that any more. It's a super safe bet that might even pay out something for them.

But, sure, it would be absolutely terrible to have a Star Trek series that isn't at the top of the ratings every week and only sticks around for a few forced seasons because of a small, devoted, deluded batch of steadfast fans. You'd have to be some kind of turbosperg to want that.

>Sherlock is trash but that doesn't make Elementary good.
No but Elementary was able to stand on its own without needing Sherlock to fail. Finally a show that does an episodic format instead of jumping on the seasonal arc bandwagon. Also more in keeping with the original Holmes shorts by Doyle.
>>
Why was everyones outfit blue with no rank insignia and everyone used first names. I have no fucking idea what anyone was supposed to be other than captain, first officer, and what I assume was science officer.

BSG reboot is kind of similar to Discovery
Trek (DS9, TNG... and TOS if 60s acting doesn't bother you. also the even-numbered movies up until First Contact, which was the last good Trek movie)
The Expanse is okay but the SJW levels are really high.

Ffs. For once in star trek, beam the enemy crew into space.

The transporter is the most deviating weapon in the entire series, and yet they beam security forces in to deal with a threat instead of beaming the threat into the brig.

Honestly, if the borg were on their game they would just get a ships shields down and beam the entire crew into assimilation pods.

He's a complete buffoon. TOS and TNG were the only ones that did that extensively. DS9, VOY and ENT all used titles, but they also used more familiar names amongst themselves extensively to create stronger bonds to fuel greater drama. It worked wonderfully and organically in DS9. Janeway's neverending TAAAHMS, ARRRRYS, CHOCK COAT AYYYYS, BLLLLAAHNAS, TWWWOVAHKS and Snneven of Niyans helped you get to the place where you had given up enough to make it through the rest of the series pretty quickly.

We have had enough fucking Brady Movies and shit that Hollywierd thinks is good.

Go to a fucking librabry and ask folks what they are actually reading?

How about listen to ypur fans for once and don't cancel DS9 in the middle of the Dominion Wars or cancel Firefly. When we LOVE some thing keep making more of it. How about trying contact with some Top Tier fantasy and Sci Fi authors? Mercedes Lackey has yet to have a series or film made of her wonderful body of work. Gay is big time popular so try making the Last Herald Mage in to a series or film?

For God sake just don't make another Thing Crow or True Grit or Ghost busters with an all female cast. Get it?

Considering that most Trek shows have shit premiere episodes, it was about as good as I could expect. I thought the Klingon parts were great, really surprised me. T'Kuvma in particular was great, but they killed him off. I also liked Mike, most of the starfleet characters we saw were meh, but Mike was alright. I think she will be a fine MC. I really like the idea of a Federation officer attempting mutiny in order to save their crew. Especially because Burnham was right, they should have had a pre-emptive strike against the Klingon ship before T'Kuvma had a chance to rally the houses behind him.

My biggest problem with the show is the camera angles and cuts. 90% of the camera angles were jarring. There were no sweeping shots, everything was shaky, and in some instances, tilted. I get that nowadays, things need to have action and JJ bloom, but I sincerely hope they slow the pace of the show down in future episodes and focus on more complex topics. This goes double for the Emotion/Logic parallel that's already been played to death in Trek. Also, most of the effects were dogshit. They should REALLY go back to ship models at the very least. But those fucking phasers were awful. Another pet-peeve, the Uniforms need to be changed. They are not functional, practical, and you can't tell what anyone is ranked. I imagine they will change them up, a la the skin tight TNG uniforms being changed, by season 2.

The show was underwhelming, but not a complete lost cause.

The Orville is too badly written to be a decent original Star Trek copy and it's not funny enough to be a new Galaxy Quest.

It can't even make up it's own mind what kind of show it wants to be so ends up doing everything poorly.
>>
>>746192836
The problem is it's going to be limited in terms of sci-fi/drama because of what it's trying to do. It's going to have a cap on its potential while STD will probably be able to push further. Orville on the other hand will keep the comfy. I can see people watching both for different reasons.

Oh, I get why so many people here like it.
The Walking Dead redditors are the new core audience.

>>
>>746193117
Oh it will draw basically polarized crowds.

My intitial assumption about the Orville was that the first season would be meh and maybe struggle to be renewed (if not at all). But, the second season would allow it to come into its own.

I don't think STD will 'grow' much as a show, given whats shown so far.

>people bitching about Inhumans looking cheap

CBS is blowing Disney the fuck out right now. One minute in and already if nothing else, this looks sleek and tight as T'Pol's oiled asshole. Visual culture, people, Abrams Trek wasn't successful because it was much better written than a solid two parter, it was successful because it was bright and flashy.
>>
>>746192515

Yes, it was actually fucking brilliant. The station made it unique and distinct from TNG which was still airing at the same time it started. It showed a different side of the universe and proved that Star Trek wasn't such a narrow setting that only stories on starships could be told. It allowed for more character development and a large ensemble cast of varying backgrounds instead of having a crew of only military personnel. Setting a show on a space station was one of the smartest things to happen to Star Trek.

I don't hate it, it's not great, it's not Voyager and it's... ok? My only problem so far and it's a bit autistic but I'm a huge fucking casual shit-lord here when it comes to Star Trek but why do the Klingons look the way they do in this? Don't they look drastically different in previous renditions and series of this franchise?

Also, a small issue, holograms, a huge Star Trek fan I know really flipped on this too, anyone care to elaborate on this? I mean, they are "old" they do the flicker, lag, and FPS drops but apparently they weren't created until after... Enterprise series or something?

Also, this probably isn't the place to ask this last question but outside of /tv/ how are regular Star Trek fans feeling with these first two episodes? Are they freaking out just as much or are they just waiting to see if it gets any better?

That's the norm for Trek. I don't think they look as drastic as, say, the jump from TOS to TOS movie/TNG Klingons.

Also I'm fine with them getting even more alien and jagged looking in future incarnations of this series.

anyone who is a fan of old star trek can't possibly be hating on her just because she's black, or a woman, or else they'd hate Uhura, Tasha Yar, Worf, Sisko, Nerys, Jadzia, Janeway, Torres, Tuvok, T'pol, and then some.
They dont normally make ANYONE'S "I hate these the most" list. Some may rank the bottom of their respective role classes, but that's not hate.

The show is the antithesis of everything star trek stands for - the concept of pointing out diversity in trek is irrelevant because sexuality, gender, skin colour and species is exactly that - irrelevant. Everyone is equal, it is a meritocracy in the truest sense of the word.

Star trek is hope and optimism for the future, but what we have here is more grimdark shitshow. Say what you like about the seth humour in Orville, at least it has the kind of love a spiritual continutation of a franchise should resceive, instead of completely ignoring the legacy.

In the most patrician of the Treks, it was revealed as a canon that the Klingons were wise in recognizing the genetic superiority of humanity and their augments in particular, but were very foolish in believing they could handle injecting hot, freedom-loving Federation DNA homegrown in the US of A into themselves. They caused widespread mutations that shrunk and even removed cranial ridges that took generations to correct themselves with intensive gene therapy. The Empire covered it up as an honorless biogenic weapon attack.

Since the Klingons are one of the most badass races of Trek and not the one trick barbarians they seem like at first glance, the mutants and healthy alike reacted to this affront to their entire race and its unborn as seven foot space vikings would: They reacted on an individual level, with some mutilating their faces beyond recognition in solidarity with their deformed brothers and sisters; others employing brutal forms of plastic surgery and metal fusing to skulls; while still others, even some of the most revered Klingons of their eras, wore their smooth foreheads as a badge of honor in the same way Klingons since antiquity wore vicious scars and oozing eye sockets, for not even with cowardly weapons of such advanced and underhanded design could their enemies hope to dilute the hot, fierce blood of the sons and daughters of Kahless.

tl;dr They didn't fuck up the Klingons, they're using modern movie magic to deliver them in all their 2br00t4h00tz glory.

If they managed to give us the true Klingon experience, they'll be punctuating all your favorite episodes with heavy metal guitar solos and duels soon enough.

That's Star Trek, anon.

The true Trekkies of /tv/ are Kirk smirking their asses off over all these misconceptions flying around and any insistence that this was a huge misfire in any way. This is exactly the dry freeze astronaut tapioca we wanted, taking us back to a time when oh, well, I guess it makes sense he's gay, he's an alien. I'm glad I don't have to question this any more and project this level ten trigger force field on every gay person and tumblr Tellaritina copyright me right now do not steal I ever see.

Star Trek is a guide on how to navigate the scary everyday world of doing your duty in the name of Ameri- er, Federation freedom, even when you want to be the one to lose your cool and cause the break down in diplomacy because you couldn't hold it together for the greater good.

Because that's all the Federation wants, anon.

Klingon re-design wasn't needed. Orcs in Space.

I really don't understand what the deal is with TV critics. Most of the time I agree with movie critics, and at the very least they acknowledge when a lot of things are bad. But TV critics think almost everything is good. Other than Orville evidently. But a TV show getting less than 90% from TV critics is like 60% from movie critics. And anything below 80% means it's shit. Which rarely ever happens 'cause they're fucking morons that like 95% of tv shows. It's just confusing to me why they're so bad at their jobs. Like I really don't get it. What an anomaly.

I think so, the timeline is irrelevant.

You should watch the shows in the order they were created, which reflects the evolution of the show.

For fuck's sake. It has always been trendy to give girls a boy's name.

Look at the 90s kids. How many girls are there named Logan. How many girls are there named Sasha.

Sasha and Logan are boy's names.

Every generation has always picked a boy's name and decided to make it a unisex name.
>>
>>746194680
You should go in this order
> TNG> DS9> VOY> ENT
The original series has some bad bad episodes and some good to great episodes.
Best series is either TNG or DS9, Enterprise is alright but canceled over ratings before it should have.
Time line wise, TOS would be next unless you want to count Discovery into the time line with only two episodes out

Reminder Dukat did nothing wrong except when he accidentally got himself stuck on the station while the boobytraps were going off because someone in the Obsidian Order went over his head and impanted an overriding command. He couldn't have known that. And when he tried to screw over a rival politician by separating that politician from his son, but then he accidentally left a trail of clues and Garak caught him, and maybe that one time he accidentally got that chick pregnant, and when his whole life was ruined when he forgot that the prophets were omnipotent beings inside the wormhole, and one time he tried to convince Sisko that he was perfectly sane, and went about this task by talking to imaginary tulpas, also the whole becoming Space Satan thing might have been ill advised. Also Kira's mom. He fucked her. Also Discovery wasn't that bad

my main problem was sonequa, she was shit in TWD and is shit in this. just a terrible actor, just does not fit the role of anything remotely vulcan or of a commander. None of it was her fault at all. It's not like her Mutiny succeeded. She didn't start the war, the Klingons were there to ambush the Federation no matter what hence why the shot up the communication array.
In fact, if her Mutiny actually worked and she attacked that ship with it's shields down, likely war wouldn't have happened at all since the Council would just see some nobody get BTFO by the Feds on Fed soil.
