I often wondered the same, truth is its not hard to talk to girls if they are interested. The problem is talking to girls who are just not interested. When she is giving short closed end answers you often wonder why isn't she smiling and laughing with me like she did with that guy. You'll start to think you are that there is something wrong with you and that is true but only in the sense that she is not interested because she is out of your league and/or you are simply not attractive enough. That part of life sucks.
Now here's the balance, as soon as those girls have hit puberty they have gone through life having guys talking to them, saying whatever it takes to get into their pants. The side effect of this is that they have poor social skills, after having every guy carry their conversations for them they are just used to that being the way things are done. Hell even if a hot girl is really interested she still has nothing to say and will just pick out random topics in hopes that you'll expand on it. When somebody grows up on a pedestal its hard for them to not look down, but even if they are nice they are not bright.
When it comes down to being serious with people like this you realise that they are husks. There is a South Park episode about the ugly people being talented and focusing that emotional energy on their future while the good looking kids lose their looks with age and end up ugly and poor with crap people skills all alone. Now that is life.
