Why people think this show is the greatest is beyond me. Sure it's funny here and there but it's just mainly capitalising on the fact that it's "weird and wacky" and to be honest it just feels like an average show. Another one that people think is funny but isn't that much is Always sunny in Philadelphia of all the seasons excluding the latest one i only chuckled a handful of times. Am I missing something about these supposed "funny" shows?
Rick and Morty is like Portal. Very good and refreshing but the OTT fan base will make you keep quiet about liking it a lot.

You really do need to get into the mindset of a Redditor normie to understand why this show is so popular.
These people have never heard of adult animation in their lives that wasn't stuff like Family Guy, it was completely alien to them. They can't laugh at these shows because they consider these shows stupid. They want a show that isn't necessarily smart or funny or well-written, but that which appears to be in order to appeal to their surface-level taste. These people live for that mindless self-validation. They don't actually understand what makes good writing or good comedy, nor have they ever even picked up a book about physics. They want to pretend they do and so circle-jerk themselves, that's what matters.
Rick and Morty is just perfect for it's demographic: these same college-age self-important Bernouts who "fucking love science". The entire foundation of the show is built upon the dichotomy between "silly sci-fi humour and references" and "things are super deep and tragic bro". This pseudo-intellectual "nothing even matters, I'm insecure about existence, we are all going to die" bullshit that R&M shits out in almost every episode is what appeals to it's audience. The show doesn't even have the tact to actually begin to offer an interesting presentation and discussion of any philosophy, so it spouts these edgy teenage catchphrases.
Nevermind the bean-headed, noodle-limbed, unexpressive character design, or how the story is non-existent until the writers beg you to feel something for these characters so devoid of substance, or how the entire show is a trendy forgettable scenario of the week memefest with just enough sci-fi references to trick normies into thinking they are smart for understanding them, or how the characters have somehow been reduced to even more obnoxious caricatures than before, none of these things matter.
What matters is that it appeals to the autistic millenial Redditor audience, and that's what's selling Rick and Morty.

It's not a bait, even if it looks like it. Japanese are masters of animated things, west can't even get close, not even in 2 million years. I like old disney and tom & jerry, but that's not in the vain of Japanese anime. It's fun, but nothing serious like Japanese anime. Some animes are cool, I love most of the stuff from Studio Ghibli for example, but there is also a LOT of shit in the anime world. The art style in One piece is great, but the way the show is presented, how it is paced (buildup, climax, aftermath) is horrible. My problem with most anime these days are the annoying scenes that suddenly appear mid-fight when two characters suddenly decide to have some bonding time, resulting in 30 min of nothing but flashbacks from other episodes, and instead of finishing the fight, it just turns into another cliffhanger.
Most anime try to be different, but end up the same. Having crazu costumes and 20ft swords and a gun the size of a leg won't put a touch to the anime. I feel like most anime is written bu retards, and drawn by artistic geniouses, but the artists can't decide the look of the anime, resulting in a huge mess of colours and shit.
That being said, there are a few gems out there.
When you watch western animations, you don't really watch it for the art, you watch it for the script. And comparing Rick&Morty to SpongeBob is straight out stupid, that's a god damn childrens show, of course it's autistic.
