There are people who live here for years who still can't speak Japanese. You're most likely overestimating your abilities. Japanese isn't like English where you can throw words together and make sentences. Each word has subtle nuances to it that are a far bigger deal in Japanese than English.
There's a whole bunch of things that are minor.
Saying things like "そうなんだ" or "へー" would signal that you're not interested. You have to be active/engaging and actually say things like "楽しかった" or "俺も行きたい".
What you're talking about sounds like it falls under 塩対応. If you've never heard that word before, there's no way you're even close to understanding Japanese. There's like another set of language that normal people use with each other that you're not going to find in textbooks or by "studying hard".
Basically, don't expect to become a Japanese master even living there after a year, even with heavy studying.

The hardest part to understanding Japanese people is basically all of the 暗黙の了解 stuff. Like in certain circumstances, no matter how much a girl protests, even maybe screams to stop, there are times where she actually wants you to have sex with her, to the point where it might seem like rape. It's a cultural thing. A girl can actually get mad at you for not "attacking her", because it implies she's not attractive enough or you didn't care enough to do it.
Understanding when this is the case and understanding when a girl really doesn't want anything sexual from you is a fine line, and even difficult for Japanese people to distinguish.
Also, if you even try to ask someone directly for their opinion, a large majority of the time, you will never get a useful response. This isn't how people communicate in Japan. It's all subtle indirect bullshit.

Had to experience this to many times with English-speaking friends. When I pointed it out they really seemed not at ease and it looked like it cost a lot to give a clear answer so I couldn't really insist.

Yeah, I'm half Japanese, but grew up in the US, so even I had trouble with this.
Anyway, good luck. 80% of 国際結婚 end up failing, so be careful if you try marring a Japanese girl. Also, my general advice to everyone is to NEVER marry the first Japanese girl you seriously date.
