"ANON!! GET OFF THE INTERNET I'M TRYING TO USE THE PHONE!!"

Sound of my childhood. I remember my internet deal charging at 2p a minute (Britfag) except after 6pm and weekends. Coming home from school and being told I had to wait to use the internet because I had been running up our phonebill, good times.

when i finally got a 56k modem, i would download music from kazaa

basically you'd find the song you wanted, click on it...come back 2 or 3 hours later and you were lucky if it was fully downloaded

I had an Internet guide book from 1993 that had two pages on the web - it called it a promising new technology to keep your eye on. Basically the book was a directory of gopher sites and shit like that.
>>
>>712412141

>>
I used my 9600 baud modem to dial into a local BBS for some Usurper or Legend of the Red Dragon.
>>
It was a lot more exciting....maybe to me at least because I was just a kid...but you didn't have unlimited access to content so you actually appreciated it. Not as many normies. Less regulation, I remember stumbling across CP and stuff on the normal web regularly.

Also downloading music off Kazaa at 4kbps. Dial up was rough.

Dial up access, text only. I paid $20 for 20 hours a month for access. This was way before AOL. Days of Compuserve.

Porn was only on newsgroups, it took minutes to download one JPG.

Chat was on IRC.

It was good though. Better that fewer people could get on it. When every idiot in the world got access, then it went to shit.

Late 90s. I remember 'cam sites" which was nothing more than people with a blog and maybe a cam frame snapshot every 1 minute or so.
Some of the fancier sites used java and would transition between one frame and the next to make it look like it moved lol.
>>
>>712414630
that still happens all the time to this day in places like best buy and geek squad
>>
I miss the pre-facebook days. The chatrooms, the communities, the fact that you weren't constantly expected to post what you were doing and still had some time offline when you wanted to. Maybe I'm getting old, but this constant overexposure and availability (or being expected to be available) as well as expected social media partaking is increasingly getting on my nerves.
>>
>>712415096

I played Barren Realms on a local BBS. Only one user could connect at a time. So I set the autodialer, and it would try over and over until the other user hung up. Sometimes would take an hour.
>>
>>712415096
Yup.
And back then, people had "handles" because you'd NEVER use your real name online.

Now look at it..
>>
>>712415203
Oh I can imagine. People aren't generally all that smart with it come to teh computerz.
>>
>>712415145
Never really used Morpheus. I remember audio galaxy. Loved that site, but it went offline pretty quickly. Used Napster, used Kazaa, used eDonkey / eMule and eventually used Soulseek.
>>
>>712410453

Wasn't Facebook supposedly created because Zuckerberg wanted to get laid? That being said there was a time before Myspace, and as a German we had a local community called Kwick that pretty much everyone I knew and met on the weekends was registered on. You had a profile, a guestbook and you could message each other. Myspace never really caught on in Germany before it tanked.

Tripod, Geocities

Fuck yes, that was funny

I remember seeing dynamic content (from hacker websites) and it blew my mind. I couldn't figure out how they'd coded thousands of pages!
>>
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ggyEwc9B5hc
>>
It was cool.
I had a 1200 Baud modem and I could call a local BBS and download small black-and-white scans of old playboy magazines over my choice of kermit, xkermit, xmodem, superK, and many others.
My modem program even had a hidden menu option that made you type out the whole conversation from War Games to get to a War Dialer (program to automatically dial every phone number within a certain range and make a list of which ones were computer lines).
>>
>>712410453
I used Yahoo, found the Games section, joined the Go Fish rooms and the lobby was a chatroom filled with people giving out a/s/l, making private rooms to cybersex, and the main chat was usually people actually literally doing *teleports behind u* role play fighting.
But it was mostly popups (I am so glad I haven't seen a popup in almost 10 years), shit quality images like animated .gifs all over webpages, angelfire and geocities everywhere, and so many chatrooms. web cams were extremely rare and that's kind of where the idea of "no girls on the internet" really took off
>>
you could literally buy the entire internet on a CD (750mb)

so yes, you could have the entire content of the Internet, as an offline-version

users didnt really interact with other users, at all. it was a website-user interaction
>>
>>712415700
I'm not sure, I never watched that one movie about how it started.
All i remember was a girl that I worked with had an account on "facebook" and I wanted to stalk her a little bit, and I had a hell of a time lol. Couldn't even view her page because I wasn't in that community or some shit.
>>
>>712410453
you could type lolita into webcrawler on your netscape browser and get pictures of naked children taken in the seventies at nudist resorts, and they only took 20 seconds or so to download

I was very fortunate to join the internet craze in 1995, we where poor fagsin the early 90's and one day my dad got fired unjustifiably from his job (he use to be a ticket agent for a major airline), anyways dad decides to sue, wins his lawsuit a few months later, after lawyer fees, etc; he receives a little over $20,000, buys me and my brother our first computer, a IBM Aptiva, we get AOL which use to charge $4.99 an hour, (we racked up almost $1200 in internet usage, we never paid it and went with a local isp that charged monthly, which was rare at the time), I use to love trolling people on the Yahoo chat rooms, one of my favorite things to do was telling people that if they wanted to see my photo, that they had to press alt+ctrl+del 3 times really fast, suddenly almost the entire chat room users would log off, (for new fags, back in the day pressing alt+ctrl+del 3 times would restart your PC), they would come back a few minutes later cussii=ng me out and threatening to report me, XD good times.

internet in 3rd grade
early 80s
had to dial a long distance number with a rotary phone and place the phone on a reciever speaker of sorts
it was slow, all computer screenes back then were ibm with that horrid green and the flashing curser

fast wd to 2001 , netzero was your friend
it got you hooked and i immidietly bought high speed

then it was sites like rotten.com ogerish. and albinoblacksheep.com that brought me to this fucking cesspool

its been fun but i swear i coul do without half the things ive seen on the internet

yup! Livejournal. And blogger.com
What's funny is, like you said, people used those sites and a "blog" was nothing more than an online diary. Most kept them secret like a diary, some would make them public.

IRC and general forum use meant constant "verbal abuse" which got us all used to it. We adopted it, call each other niggers and faggots constantly, and then when in 2005ish regular people who used to think the internet was just "for nerds" got on, got so offended. They never got called a faggot 6 hours a day before so they took offense.
that's why girls still can't handle the internet. they want it to change to fit how they think it should be, instead of blending in and accepting what's already established

Mostly pop ups. Windows that came up without asking, usually more than one at once. They'd play music or talk, and if you were on a porn page it would sometimes say gay things like "i want to suck your hard cock and swallow your hot sperm". Had to browse with the sound down so mom didn't hear you and think you're gay, even though you're totally on a straight page.
there was also pop-unders which were hidden better and harder to close

Web rings were pretty crazy. It feels like crazy was more concentrated in those early days. I remember I stumbled upon one that housed a forum that catered to people who thought digimon were real and that the digital world was something they can access.

There was even a dude who was trying to "map the internet".

Web 2.0 stuff has sort of diluted that crazy and it's more spread out it feels like. It's all still there but it's like food coloring mixed in with frosting rather than the singular drop.

I was the one who taught my mom about AOL and how to use it. I was desperate though. She started asking too many questions about what the fuck (she said 'hell' though I think) she was paying for every month. I stalled as long as I could, and eventually had to convince her that it was worth the cost. Took maybe 10 minutes iirc. It was worth it though, because shortly thereafter broadband started becoming more readily available, and it was much easier to sell her on it since she too benefited from it.

Kek I remember having to convince my parents that it was worth it as well. That shit was so expensive man. FFXI? It was capped at 56k because of the PS2 faggots. They stopped supporting PS2 for the most part though a few years ago, so I don't know if shit is still capped. >>
Cons:
- Could take a fucking day to download a 30MB file.
- Took a minute or two just to connect, and you couldn't use the phone at the same time.
- The rampant abuse of CSS by apparently colorblind people was a seizure risk for people with epilepsy, as well as people without
- Normalfag sites with pictures of their boring families and details of their vacation, but unlike now, normies were only like 10-20% of the internets, tops, and were confined to shit like AOL.

Pros:

- People did not know how to self-censor. You know insane this board is? The whole other 80-90% of the internet was like that, and /b/ as it stands today would probably be comparable to the shallow end of the insanity spectrum
- The rampant abuse of GIFs was honestly kinda cool.
- Facebook, Google, and all similar mainstream kike bullshit did not exist at all.
- No SJWs
- It was glorious.

The US Military still uses the same system from the 60s to keep track of and control the US nuclear arsenal. It's not as stupid as it sounds either. The only people around in the private sector who know anything about the system are contractors with high level security clearance, and they have a nice comfortable niche market (producing replacement parts and software updates) for themselves that they aren't about to deliberately sabotage. Even if you could buy the original hardware and learn it, you still couldn't hack the military's version of it, because it has been heavily modified over the years, to the point that it's really a completely different system altogether.

Pretty much this. I was completely satisfied with it. The reason I eventually moved on to superior cable was because my DSL provider (Bell South at the time; now would be AT&T) had very shitty customer service, and when my DSL stopped working they never managed to get it running again. They actually told us to basically just wait and hope that the problem fixed itself eventually. I think the problem was probably that their modem died, and they didn't want to replace it.
