I usually keep my beard trimmed short or keep it at stubble length, but a while ago I decided to have a go at growing a proper beard, grew it out for 8 months and it was pretty big, reached down to my shoulders almost... Yeah, just give it time. If you're worried about patchiness, use an electric trimmer with a guard, and eventually it will be a uniform length. Rinse and repeat until desired length, then occasionally trim with scissors to maintain.
