anyone got halo feel stories?
>>
God shooters have gone to shit since then. Halo 3's full multiplayer suite was flawless.
>>
>>711779049
I know man. I played swat like it was an obsession
>>
>>711778543
I use to come home every night to play fat kid with my best friend, we grew up together but he moved away before high school. We use to play for hours and some times just sit around in a forge fucking around talking. Halo kept us close. Right as the games life was finally ending the nail on the coffin was my friend being run over by a truck walking to work.

>You will never again constantly play custom games on Halo 3
>You will never be master of ceremonies with a 16 person full lobby with crazy in-game chat of people rambling about bullshit and yelling about the fun game
>You will never again forge maps for hours on end just so that you can be ready for that big custom games party later
>You will never have your friends constantly inviting you to join their parties to play some sick Halo 3
>You will never again go back into Theater mode to relive that sick insane moment when that shot landed across the map for the triple kill from nowhere

30000+ custom games played, general rank 5 Social Slayer and Big Team Battle, Halo 3 was the pinnacle of innovation for the shooter, 11/10, would masturbate to.

halo 3 was god tier
every halo game fell off from there, in my opinion

The only game that I made friends with randoms. Went on 2v2, met most l33t sniper ever met. Dominated other team so bad that we rode on the goose and he was getting mid-air headshots.

We were in tears when we hit a jump, headshot, and landed and road-killed her partner.

My god this game was so perfect in every way.

What was the highest skill level? I always got stuck on the second to highest rating and generally played on the third highest.

I do. It was the fist serious fps I ever got into and it was one I played with my dad often. I remember when halo 3 finally came out. We pre-ordered the metal box edition and everything. I have never, ever, felt the same unparalleled joy, anticipation, and excitement.

My father and I played the campaigns together many times and when we finally finished the fight in the third game I cried. I didn't realize master chief survived until later. So that night I mourned a personal hero.

My father had clinical depression, really seriously too. But you don't really notice these things as a kid you know? Stuff just happens around you and it doesn't make an impression until later. But he was trying really hard for me and my brother. He did his best to hide what was up from us and take care of us. Even during the divorce. His gamertag was CyborgDad and a few numbers that I've forgotten by now.

He had thrown out his back and couldn't move well. He went a few states away to go live with his parents again after that. Every summer I'd go visit him. He would either play some old game from the DOS era and show it to us, or he's be playing Fallout.

He had trouble adapting and playing newer games. But halo had become such a muscle memory thing for him that he was still able to keep up with us as our motor skills got faster and we got better at the game. I can't tell you how proud I was when I finally beat my Dad at Halo for the first time. No matter how bad things got for him we always had Halo 3 as a common ground.

He was a tall man, in many was I saw him as Master Cheif myself. About 6' 5" tall, and with a shaved head, he was spartan-like in many ways.

Eventually though he was found dead in that same house with his parents, accidental overdose on painkillers. The autopsy report made it sound like his heart just couldn't handle it anymore. They didn't think it was a suicide, neither do I. But I still tear up when I hear this OST...
>>
God damn... Sometimes I dust off my xbox just to put this in sit at the main screen. The song, the background, the feel of that controller in my hand again. Revisiting old saved maps that are now just empty husks of hours long passed. Replayed Legendary campaign with a friend of mine a couple months ago; shit was good but it'll never be the same. I may be pathetic, but that game was pure joy for me and a big part of my life.

This is kind of rare for me. I don't talk about my dad or even my thoughts much to people. I do my best to be strong like he was, and in a lot of ways that means bearing the weight of yourself in silence, while still being there to help others. But it's weird to look in the mirror and see parts of him in my own face. Some of my mannerisms like my laugh, etc. It's surreal that my own laugh can trigger a nostalgia hit. He had such a strong influence on me.

I want to do everything he did right, but learn from his mistakes and improve upon my own life with that knowledge. I think that would be the best way to serve his memory.

>>711778199
>you now realize that enough time has passed by that a slower paced shooter like Halo 3 would likely get panned hard by people and critics

It feels so awful. Halo 3 deserves to have a bigger player base even if it has been years since it's release. I feel if any non Halo came out with similar gameplay people would probably not care. Most shooters die withing weeks. Months if they are lucky. Only Battlefield and CoD sell big numbers and maintain popularity after launch when it comes to FPS.

>He had trouble adapting and playing newer games. But halo had become such a muscle memory thing for him that he was still able to keep up with us as our motor skills got faster and we got better at the game.

I feel this is such an underrated thing about the simplicity of Halo that many do not seem to get. Halo is simple enough to grasp but getting extremely good is difficult to master. With shooters today the developers keep adding all of these crazy movements and while it's okay sometimes I feel it is also okay to have a simplistic shooter as long as it is good. I prefer classic Halo games to Titanfall or CoD IW any day of the week. Halo also wasn't turbo speed like Quake either so it truly was a solid series that can have a wide audience appeal and not be obnoxious about it like how developers love to say they want a wide audience of players yet they seem to not even know how to get such an audience.

Man I miss these days so much. This series has gotten so awful now that they moved away from the classic style gameplay. I can totally see why even a parent would get into Halo. It didn't have to try hard like so many games these days attempt to. All what you need is solid mechanics and fun maps/campaign/multiplayer.

Halo 3 pistol sucked ass. Solid game though.
>>
>>711785083
It was very hard to use but it wasn't too bad. It was really strong actually.

With a better netcode that gun would have shined a lot more. It also had a slow rate of fire so it had a lot going against it that made people feel the gun was trash but it was decent. Of course you will always want a BR on hand anyways so pistol kind of was obsolete.

Plus my parents were the type that thought everyone online back then was a pedophile.

Damn I remember first playing Halo 2 at my older friends house, he was in high school while I was still in like 6th grade. He had to help me beat the flood missions cause that shit terrified me as a kid. He was the first one to show me KOTOR too, he bought me an Xbox for my 13th birthday and I played Halo 2 and eventually Halo 3 every day throughout my entire school career. Just a couple weeks ago found out that he murdered his wife then shot himself in the head in a hotel room, thinking about dusting off my original xbox that has been in my attic for countless years but I know I'm gonna be hit by a wave of feels ):
>>
>>711787897
Different guy here. When it was released it had the most broken multiplayer ever, it works better nowadays but I can't ever find as much people playing anymore. Also there are no rolling matches like someone else said in the thread earlier so you play one game and then go back to the menu
>>
>>711788569

i always had to ask my bros to help me with the flood mission high charity regardless of difficulty on halo 3 cause that scared the shit out of me
sorry to hear about your friend bro, thats crazy how he bought you an xbox tho sounded like a good guy
who knows what changed

I'm trying to figure out a way to explain how I feel. Back in the day it was me and my XBL buddies rotating between COD4, WAW, and Halo 3. Back then I didn't care about politics or any kind of bullshit like that. All I cared about was whoever made that insane stick or triple kill. Back in the day I struggled with pretty hardcore depression over personal stuff and chronic pain issues. I really didn't know where the fuck I was going in life, and XBL was my main reprieve from reality.

While COD4 and to a lesser extent WAW sucked up tons of hours, Halo 3 had the creative community that even Call of Duty or most FPS games today can't match, and it's where I spent most of my time. Tower of Power back in the H2 days was one thing, but being able to create totally new ways of playing and have this crazy shared experience was mind blowing at the time. Completely custom forge maps, being able to relive crazy moments through theater, fuck man I miss those days.

These days I've got a lot of my personal bullshit better handled, but it's really hard for me to just escape from reality. I still got 1 really good friend I keep in touch with from the old days. This summer I'm gonna go try to visit him IRL for the first time.

Halo 3 was the first xbox game I played, growing up I'd always had playstation, never touched the console since, Christmas 2005/6 some time, my stepdad got us a 360 with Halo and I played it for years, first of my friends to get the katana, but then he left, we kept the console and moved on. Few years later I got a notification that my terms and services had to be updated by my parental guardian otherwise I couldn't go on my account, because he set my account up and had left I lost my account, lost my friends, achievements, custom content, I started again with my new account, it just wasn't the same though. Fast forward to now, I'm 22 and last week I recovered my old acc, it let me on without a problem, spent the weekend going trough my old games and saves. Went through my friends list, offline...offline...offline... all of them, no sign of activity in years.

I loved halo 1.
it was the first game i've ever seriously gotten into.
the first time you explore the ring after crashing was mind blowing for me back in the day.
as is the first flood level. i actually felt scared.

then came halo 2. i thought the cutscenes and the environment was amazing. but some things were off, the bullets felt rubbery against brutes, and everything just felt mediocre.

When halo 3 came out i thought it would be amazing, given how halo 2 was a flop. the first level got back some of the feel from the original halo. the multiplayer was also great. but overall it cant realy compare to the original. the gameplay felt unnecessarily complicated by items which, although useful in multiplayer, were kind of underwelming in single player.

i'd been through many fpses by now. but nothing really compares to when i played halo 1. everything since has been a letdown.

i've realized that games have become rehashes of rehashes. the purity of FPS is gone, and every FPS game is just a re-shelling of the same thing.
the biggest culprit is the difference between bf3 and 4. literally just the graphics.

ever since halo 3 i'd been waiting for the next big "innovation" in gaming.
titanfall was tipped to be that. but it kind of felt like a flop. i enjoy a pure multiplayer experience.

COD series got back some of the "feel" of a decent campaign, but multiplayer is just a twitch shooter.

battlefield was the only thing that came close multiplayer wise, but the pc matchmaking system was terrible. i mean a browser? really?

far cry gave a good feel of an expansive fps environment, but that's about it. the storyline felt incongruent, and i was frustrated with the latest one that i couldnt just kill everybody and take over.

they may all be better games in comparison, but its that experience you get from your first fps ever that you spend the rest of your time chasing.

Especially because the Halo franchise went down the drain with 343's shitty management. Storywise 4 and 5 are tryhard edgy shit for 12 year olds, the sound design of weapons, explosions and the environment is below AAA, and even the skyboxes don't give that sense of awe in their vastness.

Like, they had covenant capital ships removed from the player's position 20 km but really they were just resized sloppily and put away 2 km instead of 20, The whole sense of scale was just off.

it looks like almost every gaming community i've ever heard of has died or gone to shit. (i started gaming around the release of halo reach and black ops 1) i've heard ghost stories of how clans were actually groups of friends, not just a stupid nametag and the countless hours of verbal bullshittery you would here in lobbies during regular multiplayer gameplay. its just feels weird that games now have a usable voice com system but its all dead air.
>>
>>711787056

This is the shit that's so good - I used to play halo 3 with my 2 housemate (we had and xbox and a TV/monitor each upstairs in the livingroom/attic placed side by side) and my best friend who lived down the road. We used to play team slayer and territories and shit. The best part was trash talking little girls on the headsets and teabagging their corpses. Also rushing the sniper rifle and firing all the shots into the ground just so some MLG fuckbag couldnt have it.

if you wanted Recon back when Halo 3 was release you had to impress Bungie.

I know someone from the Community got it because he made really good screenshots in Halo 3.

John CJG got it because he made the Arby n CHief.

But when Bungie release ODST and DLC you had to complete some challenges to get it. ( Regular Recon)

>clans were actually groups of friends
I actually got that feeling again in call of duty ghosts of all the fuckin games. Randomly stumbled across a group of "old school" gamers who just wanted to play with the same 6 dudes every night like the good old days. It was retarded how competetive we got during the seasonal clan war thing. Literally every day for a week or two, we'd have the same 6 dudes playing for 10+ hours a day

throughout the whole thing, my sides were literally sore from laughing and my voice was hoarse from telling those faggots on the other team that I fucked their mom almost as hard as I fucked them last game. As much as I love to shit on any call of duty game after cod4, it was everything I ever wanted from an fps during those tournaments

Ah those were the day. Halo 3 (followedd by CoD 4 and then Black Ops) were probably the best games of my generation. Halo 3 was so much fun, and the ranking system was great.

I used to "boost n00bz" to 50 and shit. I was 46+ in every playlist. I was also like super good at team slayer and doubles even playing on level 50. There was just something about it that I was fucking amazing at. I was comparatively much worse at MLG however. I had several friends (not IRL) who went semi (although one of them did live near me) for Halo 3. One dude's team even placed 17th for one tournament (2008 MLG season), but shit just fell apart for them after that, and tbh that was kind of a stroke of luck. Anyway, I was like about as good as those dudes at TS and TD, but for some reason I was comparatively worse at MLG (I couldn't, e.g. get a 50 on my own in the MLG playlist).

It was something I was really good at though. At the time I was only like 12-14 too. Today I'm 21. I imagine that if I had kept playing (and if the new Halo games didn't suck and felt more like the old one) I would have become good enough to place semi by the time I was like 18 or 19 or 20 or so.
>>
>>711792959

Oh by the ranking system I wasn't referring to exp, which was based purely on games played/total wins (which they did reset, kind of pissing people off), but rather the ranked "skill levels", which were never reset and were based on you percentage of wins (and hence your "performance"). I'm not sure if you remember, but the skill levels were different for each playlist and only applied to ranked playlists. "Social" playlists provided exp but didn't have ranks.

Also exp had no max (I remember people with over 10,000 IIRC), but you're skill level maxed out a 50, and very few people achieved that (hence why people like me got "paid" in XBL points/XBL gold to "boost" people).

Btw, in case anyone is curious I was a super awesome booster. My record was like a level 50 in doubles in 21 games or 23 games or something like that. However, I had a friend who got one in 12 games on one account.

I would go over to my friend's house and we would play against each other all the time.

The problem with splitscreen is that eventually one would call the other out for screenlooking.

I would be trying to snipe my friend but he ducks out of the way as soon as he saw himself on my screen. Or he would always know exactly where I am on the map.

One time, he was sitting on top of the base in Coagulation with a sniper rifle. I decided to try and sneak up and melee him in the back. I was moving slow enough to not show up on the radar, I was sure because I was watching his radar.

Right before I get close enough to melee him, he turns around and screams RADAR!!!! Switches to his shotgun and shoots me in the face.

I almost lost a friend that day

Halo 2 & 3 was the pinnacle of my childhood gaming. Fun community, good matchmaking, and non-fucked gameplay. My favorite was the Halo 2 glitches. I can still remember most of the fun glitches to do in custom games. Climbing the buildings on Headlong trying to avoid death barriers...good times.

There were a few glitches in Halo 3, one of which let you get out of bounds in theater mode with the camera. It's where I took my desktop pic that I still use today.

Pic related. Gotta get out of bounds in the H3 map Avalanche in order to get a clear view.

played halo 1 (on PC) 2 (at friends) which was really fun

when 3 came out i just had my own xbox360 and had around 6+ good irl friends who all played the game

we had this shack where we always had 6+ xbox306's with seperate TV's and internet connection and halo 3's, this was literally THE thing I would do every weekend and the whole xbox live and the halo 3 community and playing with friends was just fucking amazing

I bought halo reach when it came out but it really was a shit game imo, almost everyone went to reach and people said that after many patches the game was... I always kept on playing halo3 because I thought maybe people will realize it's still just as fun but it slowly died ... halo in general pretty much slowly died since they left halo 3
>>
>>711801149

>imo

No Halo Reach aside the campaign being decent was just complete shit. They completely made it RNG friendly with the unbelievable reticle bloom so that it would close the skill gap and enable the filthy casuals to have a better chance.

Halo Reach mechanics and multiplayer were utter garbage. It was Bungie's attempt to "subtley" ruin Halo on the way out when according to the Destiny poster inside of Halo 3: Recon that they were already working on their own game. They wanted people to leave Halo and come to Destiny. How better than to ruin the series on the way out instead of leaving it at the glory of Halo 2 and 3 multiplayer.
