What was the most important reason for the American war of independence breaking out in 1775? (10 marks)
There were a number of factors which led to the outbreak of the American War of Independence. However it can be argued that there were a few factors that had a greater part to play than the rest.
The long and expensive war with France and its allies (known as the Seven Years War), came to an end in 1763. Effectively France lost this conflict which result in her giving up all nearly all North American territories. Whilst this was a great success for England in terms of expanding her Empire nevertheless it was very costly. As a result of the large debt Britain had accumulated, Parliament decided that the most effective way of raising revenue was levying taxes especially on the 13 British colonies in America.
From a British perspective the rationale was twofold. On the one hand the colonies were seen as rich in valuable resources such as pine, furs, whale oil, sugar and tea amongst others. Secondarily the justification in Parliament was that Britain had defended the colonies during the seven years war so assumed that the colonies were compliant and loyal to Britain and willing to compensate the Empire for the protection that they had received.

It does appear that the attitude of the British government and the fiscal policy they imposed on the colonists was one of the principal causes for the war for independence. The Sugar Act of 1764, imposed a tax on all imports of sugar into the American colonies. This was followed in 1765 by the Stamp Act, which included a tax on the sale of all official documents even including playing cards! This tax was deeply unpopular, especially as the colonists resented the fact that they were being taxed by a parliament at which their interests were not represented. The colonists had argued that there should be no taxation without representation. It is likely that they felt similarly resentful of legislation without representation as well. Resentment was further heightened by the passing of the Townshend Acts in 1767 which imposed tax in the colonies on tea, glass, lead, paper and paint. In addition the 1770 Tea Act gave favourable treatment to the East India Company which was seen as favouritism in respect of a British company against the interests of the colonist’s business. In retrospect it does appear that the British underestimated the resentment caused by their fiscal policy towards the colonies. Protests and rioting occurred and an early sign of what was to come occurred in 1770 when a scuffle broke out at a protest at which 5 colonists were accidentally killed. This event became known as the Boston Massacre and whilst it did result in a number of the Townshend taxes being repealed, the tax on tea remained, which ultimately led to the notorious “Boston Tea Party” of 1770 where a large cargo of tea was dumped in the port.

Again the British response to this seems to have been heavy handed as British troops closed the port and local government was taken away from the colonists, which only served to increase the resentment to the British even more.
A secondary factor which may partially explain the high handed way that the British imposed taxes on the colonies was their understanding of the colonist’s loyalty to the British Empire at this time. From a British perspective the colonies had been protected by Britain during the 7 years war and it was therefore assumed that they would be loyal British citizens. The reality was that the colonists were a much more diverse group including migrants from Ireland, Germany, Holland and France. Even of the British contingent, the British government had been deporting (transportation) criminals to the colonies for a number of years. On this basis it could be argued that the colonists were much less loyal and compliant to the wishes of Britain than the British parliament and King believed at the time. Law around trading rights and obligations at this time only further added to this resentment. Laws dating back to the 1600s enforced that any colonists living on British owned land had to sell certain goods only to Britain and had to buy certain goods only from Britain. This may have worked if the colonists had felt intensely loyal to Britain and happy to deal with Britain so exclusively. In reality these artificial restrictions placed on American merchants just further exacerbated the colonist’s resentment to Britain and a desire to be free from their influence and control

Final part
Finally a third major factor that came to play a part was the extensive existence of militias in the colonies. These were originally local armies of volunteers to protect the colonies from potential invasions. However with mounting tensions it became clear to the British that these militias were a potential source for armed insurrection against British rule. Unfortunately they responded to this potential threat by sending even more British troops which only served to increase tension not diffuse it.
In conclusion there was clearly no single event which caused the American War of Independence in isolation. It was a result of a number of issues and circumstances that had been brewing for a many years until the war finally broke out in April 1775 when British soldiers tried to seize a stash of militia held weapons at Boston, to which the militia responded violently resulting in a gunfight. However it could be argued that without the sustained and increasing resentment caused by the heavy handed fiscal policy by the British government, the over estimation of the colonists loyalty and even the increasingly militant militia’s could have been diffused through diplomacy rather than force if they had been factors on their own.
