Well I'll tell you why you've never had a meme become popular. It's because there are groups who are funded and paid to create every one of the millions of memes that now exist. They're organized and are the ones who make the memes they've made popular. They make the memes in order to manipulate, distract, and brainwash with psychological operations.
Chans are an experiment and a tool used by these groups and they use memes as a form of mind control on the Internet.

I've helped with creation of few memes. This was of course when meme was an inside joke which had to be accepted by the public. Like a good joke; if it's funny and people get the 'secret' reference, then it's something that would spread naturally within the group.
Now, because the internet culture has grown beyond places like 4chan it's far easier to convince the naive public about a thing's meme status. Hence allowing marketing to occur.
On top of this we have what you could call the eternal newfag effect. The eternal newfag effect takes place in all and every sub-culture. All sub-cultures have to be renourished by new members, as the existing members eventually leave or die off.
Newfags of course have a natural tendency to prove themselves and increase their position within the group, and thus put effort in what they believe to be in the core of the sub-culture.
So what we have is basically a bunch of people trying to earn "street credit". By doing so they create artifical lift for forced memes, psyops memes, and marketing memes... The unnecessary spam memes that nobody's interested in.
And of course to be HIP you have to agree with the cool stuff.

There is a very real Stormfront element though that's been invading 4chan. This is a very foreign influence. Sure there's been racism posted since 4chan started, but it was a different tone, ironic racism. Yeah I've figured this out within the last few months, they are very proactive in their political aims. You can witness how proactive they are by watching any documentary on European neo nazis. They are largely despised by the mainstream so they will take what they can gte as a home. Pol lets them be, and they have since cultivated themselves there. I think I've figured a good way to end a thread. It actually only takes one person. Literally just spam the thread with something, replying to every one of their posts with it.
They make it hard not to just use racist insults against them, whether against whites or blacks. They bring you down to their level because they're so vile.
But I literally just spammed the whole thread and they were posting so much the thread ended in an hour. They tried making a whole new one after it 404'd, that next one lost a lot of steam and didn't go anywhere. Each time, it's different though, dynamic.
