The small camps were still in dangerous conditions with barely any food. I too have spoken to descendants and survivors of ww2. Polish woman's brother was taken to a camp because he wouldn't let them court his sister and take her back to Germany. He wasn't jewish, disabled, black, you name it.
His existence wiped off the map - there's no recollection of which camp he was sent to. I searched for him for years with my ex and we never found his camp. He was taken though. There are letters written from him to his sister.
