Hm the reason i've always seen is a two fold
They're supposed to want to reproduce like crazy to be a self-manufacturing product. After the first batch were made in tubes or whatever you can just have them keep making more of themselves, all the ones sold would be spayed or neutered before being shipped out of the "factory"
