primaries are easy to "rig", they are run by a private organization who has the final say in the nominee. general elections are next to impossible to rig, they are run by hundreds of individuals all across the country. look at your voting district, count the polling places, to rig a general election you would have to rig each of those polling places, in that one district, then all the other poling places in every other 400+ districts across the country. it would require thousands of hours of work of tens of thousands of people, there's absolutely no chance of such a thing being able to be done. you would need years of preparation, implying you could know who would be a potential nominee years in advance and then years to implement, and even if you could attempt such a thing, there's no possible way to keep such a huge endeavor secret and the probability of keeping the secret gets exponentially smaller every day the secret exists.

A state will represent a party, depending on the individual votes within that state, and then once the voting is done it's measured up which states each party has backing them.
The higher population states are more important and represent a higher number of seats, and whichever party has the most combined seats from its states has its candidate become president.
Winning the popular vote but losing the election can occur in this scenario:
Say you have three states, representing ten seats each and with equal population.
Party A gets 100% support in one state, and 49% support in both other states.
Party B gets the 51% in the states Party A has 49% support in.
Obviously Party A has almost 2/3 of the vote, but it's only won one state while Party B has won two, and thus loses the election.
There is a phenomenon of trying to exploit this, and while it doesn't occur on the countrywide scale, it can occur on smaller scales: dividing electoral areas up trying to make sure that one party is wasting votes by having them all in one place while another has just enough votes to win numerous places, an act known as "jerrymandering".
I'm not actually sure that individual votes count for states, I think it's a similar process where areas within the state are won by parties, because IIRC there's jerrymandering involved in that.
