Depends on our election. With Clinton in the white house, it's a certainty. She's openly aggressive against both Russia and Syria, and all of her positions in regards to both will do nothing but make our relations more hostile. With a Trump presidency, Putin is likely to become more aggressive and push the limits of what he can get away with, all the while making Trump believe they're buddies. Russia will eventually annex another country or invade Norway or some shit, and at that point it'll be another proxy way at least, while full-out war may be avoided in that case.

Historically, especially since the fall of the soviet union, Russia has been trying to find it's place on the world. It still has important power projection capabilities that uses every once in a while. You can usually find news about a russian air force Tu-95 caught flying over some random european country with its transponder on every 6 months for the last twenty years.
That being said, most russian anons both here and on their russian chan seem to be either quite "enlightened" or outright putin bots. The enlightened ones will every once in a while explain that Russia has tried to be close to the west ten years ago, but instead of the US welcoming the russian bear into its arms, they've (mostly high level politicians, DoD and Pentagon) pushed for proxy wars, lobbying and funding against pro-russian rebel groups.
Not necesarily to fuck the Ruskies, but because the pro-russian rebels often threaten US interests regarding the petro dollar status quo, especially since Russia is a major petrol exporter.
Overall, Russia seems to prefer to be left alone, and a buffer, non-nato zone built around them. But the post 2008 NATO movements colosing in on Russia seem to be taken as a threat for Russian politicians. And thats our current state. NATO closing in on Russia, and Russia starting drills and simulations on the evacuation of 40 million people. NATO interppreting that as an escalation in threats, and moving leopards and a few more elite regiments near Russia. And then Russia unveiling their Satan 2 ICBM.
