Windows 8 sucked massive cock. Fuck Win8/8.1. Windows 10 I was very hesitant to try out but it works great, I have had nothing but a great experience with it, we moved to it at work (corporate wide), it simply isn't designed to run off the shit from 2009. Run something newer and it runs great, in fact I can't actually find a drawback other than I miss Windows XP and being able to run digital and analog sound out at the same time without an external card. (I ran home theatre and my own PC speakers simultaneously, which you cannot do with Vista and newer.)
If you're so worried about Big Brother then just go to Linux. There's literally nothing wrong with Windows 10.
FWIW I have 7 PC's at the moment, each with a different purpose. Garage for fuck-all, home theatre PC, 3 gaming rigs for the fiance and roomate, my own PC and the old trusty XPS laptop. The only computer that doesn't run well with Windows 10, I built in 2006, an old AMD Socket 939 dual core. Can't get any SATA drivers to run the RAID array (use it for torrenting and NAS, essentially).
Other than that, everything works great.

I follow tech news pretty closely for my job, and my overall impression is that Microsoft is only interested in telemetry about how the product is used, and honestly I want them to have access to that stuff so they can make Win 10 better.
When it comes to personal user information, Microsoft fights its ass off in court all the time to avoid having to mine its user data for goverments -- honestly they seem like they fight harder than anyone else in tech for this.
Maybe I'm a sucker, and regardless I wouldn't really care either way, but I really believe Microsoft has a strong commitment to privacy -- and they have more financial resources to execute on that commitment than the open source community in general.
