There is definitely some sort of life out in the universe. Intelligent life? Well that is debatable, you gotta think about the odds of us being here right now.

Yea.. no

I think the real question is, how long can life really survive out there, how long do WE have left.

Because at our current rate theres a 95% chance we wont even survive our own solar system.
>>
I don't think the human mind can really comprehend how large the universe is.

There is no way that there isn't intelligent life. just no way.

We are quite literally smaller than an atom at a universal scale.

Might come off as a shit head, but my couple times under the influence of lsd gave me a lot of perspective (probably incorrect) about the scale of the universe and where we fall into it. Our individual goal as a single human is to live, reproduce, and get your children to reproduce. The goal of mankind as a species is that but also innately to explore and learn more. But it takes all the rest of man to help support and fuel that expedition.

This just shows that you dont realize how fuckign small an atom is, or its sub atomical parts its made out of ( Up and down quarcks and electrons), electrons being the smallest part, they are so tiny they are called Fundamental particles...they can not be split.
the only ingredient to an electron is... and electron.

Intelligent life might not be as uncommon as we think. You might wonder: If intelligence has been such a successful attribute to survival, why are we the only ones to possess such a trait?

Well, we have witnessed an increasing grip on nature in recent years (the past 200 years). We have invented new ways to help us do more in less time, we are developing ways to manipulate genetics, and we envision a future where we can traverse vast distances and explore space-colonizing new worlds and discovering new life. It would be fair to assume that any planet with life would have intelligent life on it, but only of a single species.

The odds of us being here may look slim, but the universe is expanding at a rate which we cannot even fathom exploration outside of our own galactic neighborhood. However, in time, the universe has ceased to be chaotic. Fewer and fewer chunks of mass collide together like they did millions and billions of years ago. This leaves more time for life to develop and evolve on planets beyond our solar system. Intelligence is surely on the to-do list for some of the life-forms on the other planets.
>>
>>709560483
So are you saying we're as small as or bigger than the atom or the sub atomical parts.. But no shit that's fucking high school science.
>>
>>709558736

That would be frightening. Would you feel guilty about pounding down an ant colony?

Or do you think we would care if we chopped down a forest to add our own infrastructure, if it possessed a group of the smartest squirrels? No matter what happens, the squirrel wouldn't be able to communicate with us, and when we kill it, we don't feel any remorse. As sad as that is, you cannot say otherwise.

So, if a civilization saw us, why wouldn't they think of us like the squirrel. "Oh look at those little apes playing on their 'smartphones,' oh well.. now they're dead." I'd prefer to think of ourselves as more intelligent than unintelligent.

Not necessarily.
I may sound pretty optimistic here, but with our rate of progress, all we have to do is not die off, before we can get to the good stuff, and then we can probably do things like
terra-form, if not create whole stars/planets,
create or at leas seed life on other planets,
defeat time/space limitations, (or at least advance within it)

We are already building computers that could calculate all this stuff. Not long before we can do it.

there could be life so advanced they could be orbs of light with a shared consciousness. They could be so advanced that they would seem Gods to us.

We still haven't shedded our meat sack bodies.

ALIENS ARE NOT SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN
They are simply a myth people create so that they have something to believe in. These people probably suffer from some range of serotonin imbalance, causing them to seek 'dreamy' 'out of this world' storylines. It's simply a defense mechanism to the boringness and repetition of daily life. These people that think aliens 'are out there' are imbeciles and should probably get an education.

I don't believe there is, but it's absolutely possible, considering the universe is 13 billion years old, and humans have been around for just 200,000. And we went from running around in the desert sacrificing each other to the Sun, to building cities and airplanes in ~10 thousand years.

We went from the invention of the airplane, to walking on the moon in just SIXTY YEARS.

in fact ill go one step further and say its 99.99% chance we will be dead way before our own sun runs out of fuel to burn and implodes on itself.

Threats:

1: Natural disaster: we are simply not prepared. look at how Ebola almost spread to half the planet in days.
Comets and asteroids. climate change and the switching of the earths magnetic field.

We wont survive any of that.

2: War: there's only one thing that can easily kill as many people as a bubonic plague or SARS or what ever and that's war.

3. Well we even survive the next 4 years of who ever becomes president?

We just don't have enough data yet. If we were to find just ONE form of intelligent life, it would almost confirm there's life out there advanced to the level of godhood.

>>709565772
We've been though 2 world wars in the past hundred years, supervolcano eruptions, hundreds and hundreds of nuclear explosions, asteroid impacts, the list goes on.

I think we'll be fine. We would rebuild and keep advancing even if we had a nuclear ww3, it would just be a small setback in the grand scheme of things.

the only real danger of extinction is a big asteroid impact, and there is work being done even now for a defense from that.

Ebola was literally nothing, it was extremely over hyped because it spread in areas where people didn't wash their hands and had no access to antibiotics.
>>
>>709564830
we don't even know how life was created or how to create it, how do you think that any old temperate terra is gonna gain life
>>
>>709566161
13.8 to be exact, slugger.
>>
>>709566265
Okay, so here's a final question, do we believe there is only a universe? And not more than one?

I can understand if the answer is 'not enough data' but that's a lot different than 'no'.
>>
>>709566058
doubt it
>>
>>709566422
there are many advocates of the multiverse hypothesis in science, all i can say. It's very likely but not confirmed
>>
>>709558503
maybe we were created by an alien civilization billions of years more advanced than us.
>>
>>709566606
And we're just like a petri dish of bacteria they check on every now and then as a hobby
>>
>>709558903
The Hubble Deep Field blows my fucking mind every time.

Also, re OP, Fermi Paradox.
>>
>>709566606
if that was the case then we are worth nothing since they obviously arn't watching or sending signals to us
>>
>>709560847
>some galaxies will have their own physics

Do you know how stupid you are?
>>
>>709566771
do we send signals to bacteria?
>>
>>709566771
to be fair it would cause absolute chaos if they suddenly showed up and said something like

"yeah we made you, well, it was a science project of one of our younger ones. nice cute metal things you're starting to send out. Btw if you weaponize space with those "nuclear" firecrackers we'll have to wipe you all out. Peace."
>>
>>709566850
gravities is physix fukhed
>>
>>709566593
Okay, forgive me, cuz this is gonna sound stupid probably, cuz I suck at forming hypothesis.

-Possible other life
-Other life could be advanced enough to create life/planets/galaxies/universes
All this not 100% yes or no, but possible.

Shouldn't we all be agnostic, at least in terms of our own creation? Maybe not in regard to EVERYTHING, but if there is a chance that any universe could have been created, then our could have been one of them. Again, low odds, but not 0%.

(Added note: Evolution and natural planetary creation/dispersion would be possible with advanced computer calculation)
>>
>>709567267
Absolutely.

in science you start with being Agnostic about everything and trying to prove each others ideas wrong, that's what's so great, you don't try to prove things are true, you try to prove they are false.
>>
>>709566265
>We've been hit by asteroid
We absolutely haven't, not like the one the dinos got hit by, and guess what.. there are literally THOUSANDS of them mapped in collision course with earth.
Its a matter of when, not if.

> hundreds and hundreds of nuclear explosions
Again kind of wrong there because we only ever used it twice on humans, and look how they turned out
>pic related

>2 world wars
Yeah only 2 so far...there are more to come, this should scare the shit out of you not reinforce your false sense of safety
>>
>>709566058
There is 0 chance of that even being possible.
Id tell you to make the most of this life but you are probably going to go on and make other people lives worse in some way like most humans do.
>>
>>709567533
Not the size of the dino extinction, no, but still pretty large. the Tunguska event, for example.

I was including the ones we detonating where there aren't any people.

The US alone has detonated hundreds in Nevada.

He broke it down fairly decently why your epiphany doesn't make sense, but I'll give it a shot. On a universal scale, whatever you mean by this, an atom is still as big as an atom. That's why it doesn't help to comprehend anything about the size of the universe. Don't tell me you can comprehend how small an atom is.

So in numbers, a hydrogen atom is 25 pm (picometers), or 25*10^-12 meters. One meter in relation to the radius of the universe is about 0.1 pm. Don't tell me this helps you anything.
>>
>>709568088

Actually scratch the unit from the relation, it's obviously dimensionless
>>
>>709567803
the Tunguska event really wasn't that large in relation to whats out there in our own asteroid belt let alone derelict moons and planets...
Not to mention there can be bacteria on those rocks that could wipe us out...
>>
>>709566850
>Do you know how stupid you are?

He's actually right, galaxies can operate under different laws of physics, most cosmologists agree on this. Its the fact that people don't want to let go of the law of relativity, the data from Keck has proved that our understanding of physics is completely wrong and outdated
>>
>>709559926
in fact, there is no evidence of a first "genesis" either.
>>
>>709568088
Yes that's all well and good but.

If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many pancakes does it take to shingle a doghouse?
>>
>>709568088

Also this is just the relation of one meter to a single lightyear.
>>
>>709568222
Right, that's why I said impacts are the only real danger of extinction. Most if not all other possibilities would have contingencies in place.

In the event of (likely) ww3, many people would die, yeah, but there will still be people afterwards.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned that the "universe" as we know it is actually just a megagalaxy which renews itself upon becoming a Higgs Boson, and that outside of our own megagalaxy is infinite space? I mean, it makes complete sense logically: if one fires a laser beam at the edge of our "observable universe" towards "empty" space, it would eventually find another body of matter, ie. another "observable universe" (megagalaxy)

tldr: what we can see about space accounts for 0% of all space, since infinity. ∞! anyone?

>>709571306
Because this theory has been proven to be false for a fuckign decade now, jesus christ anon get an education.
