By the Pythagorean theorem, we know that y^2 + x^2 = h^2, so the above equation reduces to h^2/h^2 = 1. Therefore sin(a)^2 + cos(a)^2 = 1.
But yeah, you kind of just need to memorize them, but after this class you'll just be given them. In college nobody really remembers most of them and we all needed to be reminded, especially by 4xxx level classes where it came back into play after calculus.

No worries, when I was studying it others did the same for me. The best way to work through the proof is to work through it on your own. Pic related is the kind of triangle I'm referring to.
