People have more money to purchase items they never could before, like expensive electronics, cars, vacations, etc. This leads to more jobs in those types of industries, since more people will be able to purchase them.
I will say that a minimum wage increase does usually affect "mom & pop" stores more than most, since they're more likely to have wages as a higher percentage of their overall costs.
The bottom line is that a bunch of money sitting in a bank does almost nothing for the economy. It helps the banks, but that's about it. However, when people in lower paying jobs get wage increases, they don't stack money in the bank, they spend it. Spending money is what fuels the economy, so having more money in the lower/middle class's hands is always better for the economy.

When I was a kid, if there was a freedom scale, we used to be about a 7 or 8 out of ten. We'd be optimistic today to say we're a 4. It wasn't the hippies that brought you the patriot act and the institutionalized overreaches of government. We need an era of reform, and neither of these parties want it, because the people in charge of reforming it benefit from the system being as disfunctional as it is.
This country no longer has a functional mechanism to make good enough decisions to ensure a future worth working for and living in.
