Forget the symbols for a moment. You have two apples. Now you add two more apples into that group. How many apples do you have in that group? Not twenty-two, right? It would be four.
4 is the symbol that represents the new quantity of apples. So 2 apples + 2 apples = 4 apples. Now let's get back into mathematics mode and forget the apples. Now it's 2 + 2 = 4.
