damn F-14 is a big fucking plane
Rota buggy still reigns supreme!
>>708349817
F-104 still looks badass.
>>708350104
Yeah she is. The only fighters that are about the same size are the Su-27 and its offspring.
That and the Tu-28 but that was an interceptor and definitely an exception to how those type of plane are typically designed.
Oops

Spectre is best C-130.
>>708350451
that is navy grey
all army aircraft are green, black, or brown
the navy (and its subcomponent the marine corps) has super cobras, not apaches
>>708350537
Hope Sully is flying that shit.
>>708350332
that shitty flight time / range tho
>>708350896
>>708350814
this was a rare testbed for grey color scheme on apaces. only 1 was made like this.
>>708350525
F-18 is outdated and desperately in need of being scrapped.
Nothing is tidier than this, also has the heritage of the gods at Lockheed behind it.
>>708351087
f-18 is doing just fine. it has another 15-20 yrs in it imo.
>pic not related
>>708351045
>>708351045
cobras have 3 main rotor blades
apaches have 4
>>708350904
Oh, it had plenty of problems, but 60 years later it still has competitive speed and climb rate.
>>708350904
Didn't need it, its role was as an interceptor (NOT as a bomber, you Luftwaffe Dummkopfs). It just had to takeoff, get altitude really quickly, make some passes on bombers, and then land.
>>708351281
this isn't a cobra dummy, jesus christ. my guess is that the 4th blade is obscured
>>708351236
f-18 is already 20 years old, it gets overhauled every couple of years with new tech, but its the same air frame from the 90's, if it went up against a euro fighter or current gen mig it will just cant compete
>pic related
>>708350783
Puff the magic dragon
>>708351567
but it's the workhorse of the US air force and isn't going anywhere soon. we have thousands of them in our fleet. i think it is arguable that they aren't as competitive, but they are competent at worst.
>>708351087
Super Hornet still useful, but agree that the F-35 will be a huge upgrade.
Kinda funny how the know-nothing armchair pilots completely miss the point of a real 5th gen fighter.
>>708351567
A Super Hornet would wipe the floor with any Mig. Sukhoi, perhaps not.

the USSR and later Russia have always been able to produce a comparable aircraft to anything the US has put into service

>>708354694

lets get serious annons. lets discuss why boeing is so much better than airbus

So the f22 is one of the best fighters out there with manuverabliity, turn speed, stealth and looks sexy af. Why did they cancel it!?
>>708356039
Because it essentially became the f35
>>708356039
Because it cost almost 2 billion a piece when the f-35 only costs 150 million a piece.

I have little faith in the efficiency of any large organization for any complicated task.
But can you really say they are more wasteful than, say Microsoft buying Linkdin for $28B or what ever it was?
No doubt the military-industrial-complex is wasteful. But it sure does develop some wild-ass shit.
>>708356276
the fucking f35 cost 1.4 bnillion per unit.
congrats faggot. youre a full on retard
>>708356651
I believe it
>be me
>working at a foundry

>cost us ~$80 in labor to make 50 of them
>we charged $2000 each
>>708356728
way out the ass. carbon fiber cracking though perhaps
>>708356839
The military contracts all their R&D out to private companies... They don't develop shit on their own. Even the f-35 wasn't designed by the military.
>>708356039
Because the US wants a true 5 Gen fighter like the F-35, not a 4.5 Gen fighter like the F-22.
>>708356415
And drones are a huge part of 5 Gen.
>>708356839
Eh they've lobbied their way so far up the gov'ts ass that they are far from efficient these days. Not that the pentagon is any better but they need an outlet for their shadow money. That trillion dollars isn't simply missing.
>>708357027
>4.5
>>708357027
The f-35 and f-22 are made for complely different purposes. The f22 just costs 3-4 times as much, so they decided to go with a machine that can do most of what the f22 can do.
>>708355224
Because they didn't invest billions into a whale of an airplane that was 3 decades behind its time?
Or is it because cockpit trays are for the weak? Both have merit i guess.
>>708357245
holy fuck. go check your facts. the F35 is the most expensive aircraft to date at 1.4 billion an unit.
>>708357027
I don't know, I am by far not a good source anything related to the F-35 just like everyone else on this board.
The media makes it look like snow ball project that got too big to shut down or cut the losses.
The thing only has one jet on it... As an engineer who has seen how non aeronautical systems fail all the time, a one engine, combat jet just sounds unsafe.
F-35 from the outside looks like a poster child for government incompetence. The government does get somethings right. The Predator drones seem effective.

I missed the launch but I saw the reentry. Live in texas
>>708355571
I just googled it. In 2014, the 787 had issues with wings cracking while STILL IN PRODUCTION because of changes boeing was making to manufacturing process. In other words, the cracked wings didn't make it off the factory floor.
The 787 is a first.
>>708357382
>the F35 is the most expensive aircraft to date at 1.4 billion an unit
wut? You some kinda retard?
>>708357702
oh reguarding its carbon composite.
yeah, the 787 as a new aircraft had a ton of new features like the lithium ion battery, carbon composite wings, carbonfibre infused titaniums. all looked good on paper untill it got in the air and tested.
since then they havent had any issues with it. meanwhile airbus hasnt updated any of its exsisting fleet.
im reguarding the new 737 line
new 777 line
and 747-8 and 747-9x line
>>708357882
"The real news here is that the estimate for procuring F-35 aircraft over the life of the program is down by $7.5 billion in fiscal 2012 dollars."

>>708357882
"The F-35 program has been plagued by cost overruns and delays, has been grounded twice, and even has been criticized by those within the Pentagon. The $1.5 trillion that will be spent on this wasteful Pentagon program is an enormous sum. It is equivalent to the cost of the sequester." at the time of this artical.
>>708351793
Sorry kiddo. There are ZERO F18s in the US Air Force
>>708357441
> has one jet on it
You're looking at it wrong. One jet means half the failures, half the cost and half the complexity. Sorta. Or so the theory goes.
We're well past the point when jet engines fail routinely.
>>708358073
Oh shit, someone choosing a WWII fighter that isn't the P-51, Spitfire or anything the Germans made. Nice to see.

for it's time, I'd say "the best" aircraft in my opinion would be the Horton 229
having the radar signature of a large seabird at ww2 would mean you were virtually invisible, had they managed to get proper engines for this aircraft, who knows what would have been the outcome...

It wasn't designed as stealth, it was designed that way because the Hortons (and Lippisch) were obsessed with tailless designs.
It flew twice, crashed on the second flight killing the pilot.
it was also incredibly unstable, as we know from other flying wings like the B-2 they all need to be virtually fly-by-wire to handle it.
the upside is, you put good engines on it (not shitty Jumo 004's) and you got yourself a craft that can climb faster than any prop or jet of its day.
I think the Me163 was the greatest thing to be flown out of Nazi Germany, it screams desperation, technology, balls of steel and lethality (for sender and receiver)

either A-10 or B-52, the B-52 first flew in 1952, and is still flown today, not only that but many B-52 are being upgraded to last until 2044, possibly giving it a 92 year lifespan. The A-10 is just plain incredible, its a plane built around a 19 foot long, 30mm, depleted uranium spitting cannon. Just like how planes like the B-17 were designed, its frick-frackin' hard to shoot down, each of its engines are mounted on explosive bolts so if one is on fire, it can be jettisoned so that the fire doesnt spread, and the plane can still fly. Also, correct me if im wrong, but i believe that the A-10's control surfaces have 2 separate redundancies. On top of that, the pilot sits in a titanium "bathtub" that is bulletproof to some very large shells. debate me biaatch
