No. The US knows better than to start a direct war with Russia. The US has almost zero chance of besting Russia in a conventional war and any such war would result in the Russia occupying huge swathes of the US mainland. In a nuclear war, US would be annihilated before it knew what happened.

It is actually possible that Putin's administration IS leaking documents and egging on divisive social movements like BLM or feminism for the purpose of directly attacking the US government and influencing its politics in an effort to make the US stand down and limit power projection.

Fighting a conventional war is much different from fighting against proxies supplied and funded by other superpowers. USSR proved this as well when it lost it's invasion of the Afghanisatn. The goal for US and NATO is to have a combined military and intelligence strength that is not just far beyond Russia, but any combination of Russian, Chinese, Iranian, Korean, etc. forces. In my opinion, the desire to remove Assad from power has several reasons:
1. Reinforcing the view of US and NATO as sole military superpower and ultimate decision-maker
2. Preventing expansion of Russian regional influence
3. Potentially some legitimate humanitarian concerns
If the Assad regime remains in power, it is a symbol worldwide that the US military machine can be resisted and this could change global geopolitics in a number of ways. The reason Putin wants Donald Trump to win is because Trump has proposed keeping Assad in power and fighting ISIS, and Putin does not want conflict with the US. Even though Putin is challenging US military presence in the region, it is unlikely he wants actual conflict, he is more or less trying to defend sovereignty and playing a very risky game to do it.
Hillary's and Barack's plan of a no fly zone in Syria would entail shooting down Syrian and Russian aircraft that breach the area designated. Russia has stated they would retaliate if their aircraft was fired upon, so there is reason to believe direct conflict between Russian and American forces in Syria is a real possibility if we are to move forward with this.
