Anyone here a electrician? I'm thinking about going to school for it but I'm not sure if its worth it? I also want to know what I'm getting into if I do

On that note is anyone in trade school in general? If so how is it?
>>

First year apprentice here. Haven't gone to school yet. Going to work for a year first.
>>
I used to be an electrician. I instead ran a landscaping company f I r 18 years. It is stupid easy to do. Plainly obvious. No schooling needed.
>>
>>707525406
Me too.
>>
Man, it can be a good paying job. But I've done it, and won't do it again. It's easy once you know everything but bosses will expect ridiculous home completion times and it was hard fucking work. A lot of Mexicans are in that field because Americans don't want the jobs. You start getting paid like shit, doing most labor, and once you become a "master electrician", you get paid well and do minimum labor, cause your bitch boys do it for you. I put in windshields and it's a walk in the park compared to that shit.

If you didn't go to school then how did you get started? Do you just find an apprenticeship? Is there any benefit to going to school first?

And you're asking for advice on /b/?

Good luck with that life you mentioned.
>>
>>707525896
What state do you live in? I'm willing to do the work if I can make a living starting off. What's the typical starting pay? I live in nj if that helps

>>707526206
A legal living I'm not trying to go to prison
>>
>>707525224
Don't listen to them OP

Depends if u wanna do industrial, commercial, mining, hazardous locations...

Diversify yourself and you'll easily find 6 figure wages as a journeyman.
>>
>>707525224
Not anymore. Everyones a fucking electrician now and you'll never find work.
>>
>>707526003
I contacted the owner of the company, had to go through a lot of paperwork, and back and forth between our local college and our secretary since you need to be signed up for school through the business.

I'm registered at the college, but they periodically will send out letters saying that they have spots available for first years, usually closer towards January and September. I (and my employer) can then decide if I'll go or not.

Benefit to going to school first? Depends on the school I guess. Whomever is in charge of you at work should be teaching you the basics anyway, so you're learning while actually doing work. If you go to school first, you may know more, but will have no, or at least very little hands on experience.

I'd prefer to work first, then go to school
>>
>>707526500
Oh, yeah, not prison. Right.

You probably shouldn't listen to any of my advice then. Sorry.

Now.

After working in construction, my favorite part is when someone turns the lights on and the electrician's pliers explode

Other than that it seems easy if you know what you're doing, but it's time consuming.
>>
>>707525224
4th year electrician here. It's monkey work, do it. Other trades know you have it piss easy and they give you shit for it, but fuck them. They picked a trash trade.

10/10 would recommend

It was my brother who was in the program
I know he worked as an electrician helper for about 3 years as he went to classes at night a couple times a week. I'm sure you have to pay your union dues, and I remember loaning him money for his books once

Engineer here, but I work with union electricians, Inst. Techs, machinists, and pipefitters, EL'S and IT'S do a little better than the others, $31ish/hr, full bennies, OT. Most of my guys make more than I do after OT and I've got a 4 yr mech eng degree and 10 yrs exp
>>
>>707525224

Don't do it OP, unless you want your IQ to go down drastically.

> I managed union electricians for 10 years in Chicago on large commercial projects. I speak from experience.

Being in the trades is like being the smartest kid kid in the retard class. You're still a retard.

>But I'll make good wages with my tradesman job.

Yeah if you're not already white trash, you'll turn into it fast. Then you'll start to think that working your whole life is the best way to live this short life.
>>
>>707525224
Best money and working conditions will be i working on large commercial sites and installations. Robotics and programing them might be a better growth field- and less likely to be replaced by illegal Mexicans.
>>
The other night was very late too.
>>
>>707531067

That's why you're an engineer. You think working for a living is the smart way to live life.

Wagecuck

Have fun getting up for work tomorrow, and going to an office for 8 hours.
>>
>>707531586

Large commercial sites are no better than doing houses.
>>
>>707528826
Idk the electrician I know just spends a fair amount of time on things. I wouldn't say it's bad though.

>>
>>707532477
How do you know?
>>
>>707525224
Are you fine with math? There's a surprising amount of math involved. For instance, for residential, you'll need to be able to calculate how many wires you can fit in the box based on wire size and the size of the box, what's going in the box, etc. For industrial, there's things like mastering pipe bending, which also has a little math in it, but is mostly just figuring out where to bend and the angle you have to bend, plus things like how much of the length of the pipe is taken up because of that bend, etc. etc. etc. Fun stuff, though. Not to mention you need to be able to read/understand the code book and remember the most important codes off the top of your head.

Oh, and I'm not an electrician these days. I went to school for it, but applied the skills elsewhere. Learning how electricity works and the logic behind it translated really well to programming, which is what I do now.

Hurry now.
