What does /b/ think of investing in silver? I have about 500 bucks lying around. I'll sell it when economy goes to shit. Good plan or retarded?

You're better off investing in bitcoin.

it will not make as much as it could by investing in the market

So you're gunna buy it for $500 and sell it for $550?
>>
>>707510124
Bitcoin isn't backed by anything. Precious metals at least have intrinsic value.
>>
stupid, silver is basically worthless and gold is going down in value too. bit coin would be a smarter investment
>>
Its only 500$, even if the price of silver doubles in 10 years, you made 500$, what's that to you a weeks pay?

Its too little to invest.
>>
>>707509801
It's a good bet. Know that the years that the market is booming are bad for precious metals generally, and the years that the market is in a slump are the times where gold/silver are worth the most.

And generally speaking, gold/silver over time go up pretty substantially. It's worth double what it was 10 years ago. Precious metals are ultimately smarter than a savings account.

When inflation is hitting our currency hard (like over the last 10 years) that's when gold/silver sees the best growth.

Also, it's best to just trade them on a market without actually having them on hand. Gold/silver can easily be stolen and to physically sell bars/bullion takes so long the market could easily shift significantly in the mean time.
>>
Buy canadian money. Double your cash.
>>
>>707509801
You don't "invest" small amounts into metals like this.

You buy silver and gold because they are stable and if your dollar goes to shit you still have a stable value of metal that you can sell.

It is to mitigate the loss of currency value, not a way to make money. $500 isn't worth stabilizing. Get you some compounding interest and reinvest.

Bicoin is a solid choice too. I actually made thousands when I bought hundreds of them when bitcoin was worth less than a dollar a bitcoin. I cashed out when it hit 28 dollars a bitcoin and thought I was a supergenius. Then it went up to 2600 in a year..... then back down to about 600.

Had I have cashed out at 2600 I would have become a millionaire.

That being said, bitcoin is also a solid choice. It tends to go up significantly in a very short amounts of time, but it also crashes significantly too.

Whenever there's major unrest in nation's currency or savings bitcoin does well.... and every time bitcoin or a bitcoin market is hacked, bitcoin takes a plunge. Buy low and sell high.

I personally only fuck with silver, gold, and bitcoin. They are easy to figure out and trade. The stock market is much more volatile and without really knowing the inside scoop on these companies, you're just as likely to lose money as make it (the guys that are stock market "pros" like the Rothschilds, Buffett, or Soros are, in reality, guys who have a lot of knowledge from insider trading and politicians, that's why they do so well).

No shit.

But it's still done anyhow.

That's why nearly everyone in Congress is a millionaire despite only making 175k a year. When they legislate in a company's favor they are frequently paid in assets. They also pull the strings in the market and as obscenely illegal as it should be, can play the market at the same time.

Also, their campaign donors get info from politicians as well....

These are the major movers and shakers of the market. The little guys, small time investors without the inside scoop only make chump change compared to the others...

If economy goes to shit. Would be better to have silver/gold coins that could easily be traded for essentials. You aren't going to be carrying around silver bars to Barter with. Also I would invest that $500 or so in a beater car (honda civic etc). Try and fix it up and sell to a college kid for 1-1.5k. Only if you have the space.

Not who you're replying to, but that's not intrinsic value. Precious metals and jewelry are the number one example of a commodity without intrinsic value, it has only exchange value. A good example for intrinsic value would be a plot of land or non-perishable food.
>>
>>707513425
Paper isnt worth dick in the end
>>
>>707509801
Go look at the stocks sites for commodities - they will show you the trends

http://www.nasdaq.com/markets/gold.aspx?timeframe=10y

Its known that China and other developing countries have been buying up gold reserves (which everyone else also rushed to for the global crash) over the last decade to back their currencies while US has been trying to convince the developed world to dump gold and go entirely to Fiat currency.

More than likely US is keeping a lot of gold in secret reserves, for a rainy day (look up what happened to the Ukraine gold reserves when that 'rebel uprising' happened in the east)

Anyway.. I wouldnt buy silver, as it's too common, you're better off buying land/real estate or, gold/platinum I imagine. In times of War/global recession, everyone buys gold, and for good reason.

Hey anon are you me? it's funny, I have also 500$ lying around and for the last month I think about starting to invest in precious metal, I'm on the fence also.

But I should say that I'm poor, in a dead end job, trying to start my career. I have only about 5k$ invested in a balanced portfolio (index fund) and another 5k$ in cash, I want to hold about 5% to 10% of my net worth in metals.
I'm not a doomer or particularly interested in collecting special coins, my only goal is financial security in the long run.

What makes me hesitate is that it seems that a lot of bullion lickers are mentally instable (paranoia, conspirationist, afraid), or overly optimist about the price climbing to the sky. Most of the information is provided buy people who are in conflict of interest, selling silver bars and hyping this. Finally, it's kind of hard to sell at a fair price (the bid/ask spread is large compared to other investment)
>>
>>707511512
You have to prove it was insider trading to convict, and even then, usually the companies involved will cover it up making it hard to collect enough evidence. They buy shares etc through third parties offshore and all sorts of shit to obfuscate anyone looking into it. It usually costs more money and time to chase the money than the conviction will be worth to the state
>>
>>707509801
Gold is better, less of it is worth more. You don't want allot of something. Its heavy and could get lost.
>>
>>707513246
Check the gold prices over the last 10 years - I posted the link above - during the global recession the prices skyrocketed, as thats where rich people and brokers etc all pool their money in times of hardship - they have done so for the last 100 years and will continue to do so until people no longer covet shiny things
>>
>>707515203
Yeah but one guy on 4chan said you're retarded if you do this. Who are you going to believe?
>>
>>707513425

I'd argue the US Government corrupted it by pushing fiat money over the gold standard, and basing their economy on the potentials of fear and greed over it's actual productive value.

The only way to beat the system is to figure out how to live off the land/wilderness, but nobody will do that because the benefits of keeping the pigs at the top table outweigh the drawbacks of having to scrimp and claw to survive on plant roots and berries

the problem with small investments in metals is the fees. You usually don't get all that great of a price once you take in the S&H for physical and brokerage fees for investments, and if you are buying coins from dealers you are probably getting screwed.

Just my two cents, but if you're looking for bigger swings in price silver is a better buy and more undervalued. If you're looking to sit on it until you're 65 you're probably fine either way. Also above ground silver is consumed at a higher rate than gold, most gold sits in vaults or on fingers or hangs from ears and necks.
>>
>>707516463
I understand what you mean, but the price volatility and low liquidity definitely add a speculative component that make it not an ideal saving vehicle. It's sexy and comforting maybe to hold it in your hand, and surely in the unlikely event that you describe it will store your wealth in a post-armaggedon scenario.

>>707509801
Space mining is going to wind up crashing the price of metals when that gets going. I wouldn't invest in it long term. One asteroid containing silver will supply enough silver to drastically reduced the price of it.

>>707518479
I've thought about this subject a lot.

If a company has enough money to mine an asteroid of silver they most likely would want maximum return for the investment.

They wouldn't dump the silver on the market. If wordered got out that they were mining an asteroid with high silver content that would make the cost of silver plummet for fear of commodity degredation (i.e., them dumping it on the market...)

So instead, they'd do the sensible thing, which is to keep the price artificially high by only adding a small amountown of silver to the market over time.

This would ensure that the price is never murdered by a flooded market and they have maximum ability to earn back the principal spent in the mining operation.

Tl;dr- No you stupid fuck, that's not how businessmen think.

2000 I bought 30 oz of silver at 6$/oz and 2012 sold it at 45$/oz.

It was fun but got me nowhere.

unlike gold (Which is only used on exposed contacts because it doesn't corrode) silver has many uses in electronics being the most conductive metal at room temperature. Better to rush Midas instead of vanguard in a safe farm lane.

He would have to possess all the equipment + access to a stamp to certify the purity, something that is typically not accessible to random citizens

If it's unfit to be reissued it's illegal. Pretty sure melting it renders it unfit to be reissued

Invest it in yourself op. That is not enough to even think about investing and getting a valued return.

I was thinking of saying something along these lines. Crapping out say 20 or so preferably non white kids, quitting your job and then sucking off the tit of society with free housing/food/ect. Then when the kids are grown you can rely on them to take care of you.

I've been short silver using the DSLV ETF -- idk, maybe it's time to go long? Are you thinking long term? Buying physical silver?

I did a bunch of work for an old guy who lived around the corner from my folks when I got out of college. He paid me with a mint bag ($1,000 face value) of silver dimes. My pops figured it was worth about $8k at the time, I got a job as a construction estimator right around then, and stashed the bag and forgot about it. It's now worth around $13,800 twenty years later.

I've made FAR more money investing in firearms, in particular WW2 era 03-A3s, M1 Garands, and 1911A1s.

I think that silver and gold is ok as a part of a portfolio, but guns and ammo is the very best way to invest in tangibles.

no you can't
but you can take them on a graduation trip to mexico and sell them as either sex slaves or organ farms

If the economy goes to shit, who's going to want to buy silver for the price it was when people had money?

Buy a bunch of silver dimes and quarters and halfs (pre 1965).

Try to buy from an individual, not retail.

LOL actually the equipment is readily accessible. But whom would buy homemade silver coins/bars?
>>
>>707526195
>But whom would buy homemade silver coins/bars?
how to know if you should use who, whom, or whose
>swap the form of who with the equivalent form of he
>who = he, whom = him, whose = his
>place that form of he into the sentence
But him would buy homemade silver coins/bars?
>does the sentence make sense?

10 points for trying to look smart

This guy gets it.

Shit, for $500, go to your nearest casino and put it on roulette: red or black.

50/50 chance of making more money than you'd make on investing in silver.

For 500 bucks, you might as well put it in a simple compounding interest account...or go to Vegas.
>>
>>707513246

Um, if the economy does collapse, what makes you think this guy would even get a chance to sell his silver?

I imagine he'd lose it all when he tried to go to "market" with his bar of silver and he never made it there because he'd either get jacked by a local strongman's militia, or he'd get fucked over in the deal.
>>
>>707527746
theres also 2 green spots on roulette wheel so its not 50/50

Buy some uranium stocks and forget about it. Good chance demand will increase in the medium term. It's only $500, pretty sure you can do without it for 5-10 years

The only way $500 worth of silver now would do you any good if things turn to shit, is if things get so shitty that you need to sneak out of the country to escape an oppressive govt and the silver bar may be enough to bribe someone that has a means of smuggling your ass out of the US or whatever country you live in.
>>
>>707530718
In that scenario a gun and a few boxes of ammo may actually be a better investment.
>>
>>707510503
Fucking retard silver and gold have always been valuable and always will.
