I dunno about archives, but search google for an extension that enlarges all images in a thread via a single button, and then right click on the webpage and select save as.
Make sure the file type is webpage, complete, and then it'll download a webpage file which will link to a copy of the thread, and it will create a folder where you download it with all the images in the thread.
I distinctly remember having some of the webpage files 404 on me before, but I have 2 on my harddrive right now from quite awhile ago that still work, so the ones that 404'd might be a freak thing.
Maybe I didn't download them before they 404'd or something.

It's a cached/local archive thing. Literally opens your browser and instead of a url it's the file path to the webpage file on your harddrive.
And if you do complete, it downloads all images into a separate folder.
Come to think of it, if it's a cache, that could mean that clearing your cache could break the link, and that might be why they 404'd on me before.
I don't know for sure though. And I don't know of a better solution.
