Armyfag here, joined when I was 22, tried going special forces, got hurt and it didn't work out, stuck as an infantryman for now, got 3 years leftvin my contract. My advice to you, don't bite off more than you can chew before you're even in, take something that you can get a career in, and if you want to go further than that, or do want to go combat arms, the choice is always there, just try getting in and seeing if it's for you or not, but my recommendation, join the Air Force, you get treated much better and the quality of work is a hell of a lot better too. All in all, do your research before joining

If you have a degree of any sort, or are reasonably intelligent, air force will give you the best pay and benefits. Otherwise, army is the way to go as they have the most options for jobs, decent pay, and you can gain skills useful in civilian world. Marines is for angry young men that want to go to war, or people who want to do it as a career for the next 20+ years. Navy and CG are middle of the road between airforce and marines. Not quit as many civilian transferable skills, but less of the motard grunt attitude. Source: lots of friends and family in various branches of military.

The military isn't what it used to be. The benefits aren't there anymore. The pay is about what you'll make working in a warehouse. The only upside to that shit anymore is the bragging rights and you only really get those if you're in the Marines.
My best advise to you is to hit up a trade school and get certified in something. College degrees are a dime a dozen now but certifications showing you're not some lazy jack off who is gonna sit in a cubicle playing on Facebook are gold.

Have you talked to recruiters in your city for each branch, and found out what skills they are looking for? Each one will have specific recruitment quotas, and they are only permitted to sign people up for jobs on those lists unless you're some sort of Chris Kyle type person. Call and make appointments, don't just show up. This shows you're serious about it, and your recruiter will treat you with more respect and be honest with you. And don't worry about what your friends think of your choice of branch. It's better to get a good job, and be happy and successful in it, than prove to your friends that you're as cool or tough as they are. You said you're 22. You need to make decisions for you, and no one else. I bandwagoned a lot when I was your age, and let family and friends badger me into doing things I had no desire to. Ten years later, I have nothing but regret, debt, and a failed business. Be smart now, so you don't end up starting again from square one when you're 30.

I was a 63B in the army (mechanic) and shit was cash. Motorpools are always laid back and job is pretty easy. Lot's of cookouts, sports days, got stationed in Hawaii, Texas, and South Korea. My advice to you, is to go navy and ask to be either an aviation electronics technician, or an aviation electrician.
