Technically they do pay. There is no minimum wage law here, but if there was, the allowance is about a third or a fifth of what you'd expect minimum wage to be, so it's straight wageslavery but worse.
It's not purely no-expenses. I do realise that there are things that (pardon for me not knowing the correct word) you are given concession to, like cheaper bus/train fares, but you still have to pay for your own food outside of whatever slop they force-feed you at the scheduled meal times.

There is a WW2 movie, depicting the perspective of my ethnicity. I don't remember the reason we (ie, not Chinese) chose to fight as gallantly as we did, but I do remember a small bit where there were Viets and Chinese (ie, from China) Communists around and that we resented them greatly because Communism was a threat to our religion.

If I remember correctly, the British in Asia during the war were mostly interested in protecting India, the Japanese swept through most of the rest of their colonies there. I know they had a big port there but they must not have thought it was that important.

The US barely tried fighting Vietnam, which is what is so strange about the whole thing, there was no invasion of North Vietnam, just poorly done counter insurgency and fucking up South Vietnam's political system because the people running the US state department were fucking idiots.
