yeah and species specific extinction events happen every few thousand years. events that take out entire ecosystems are spaced roughly 20k years apart, caused by meteors and volcanoes, mostly.

gold is a good example but it too will react with the environment around it over millions of years. a million years is long enough for literal stone to form. the chemical reactions taking place on a geological time scale will not spare a lump of gold. hell, even running water would tear apart a lump of gold in just a few thousand years.
