The MAIN purpose of 2nd amendment is to protect citizens from a tyrannical government. The early american settlers came from European countries that had strict restrictions on citizens owning guns, swords and other weapons used in warfare. In europe, they wanted to limit the people's ability to start revolutions.
Our forefather's believed that the only way for the people to keep a government from oppressing its own would be if the citizens could defend themselves. This is the same reason why dictators always want to de-weaponize the citizens earlier in their process.

For "assault" rifles there are very very very few, I'd say less than 100 on the streets in America. As they would have to import it. Most people stick to handle guns for crime since it's easy to conceal. Guns aren't the problem, it's the black culture and gang violence currently causing these major issues in America. We've had guns a long time, why is it now that its spiking to dangerous levels? It's because of the current economic standing and how easy it is to make quick cash by robbing and killing.

The founding fathers passed the constitution because they had won freedom. The bill of rights was always to be a part of the american identity but rather then wait for the words to be hashed out they passed the constitution first (so that nation had laws and an identity) then on the next congressional session negotiated/ voted on the bill of rights.
It's petty semantics whether or not it's one document as It was always going to be added. In fact the original plan was to add the bill of rights directly into the constitution but they had a better idea.
tl;dr the bill of rights was conceived at the same time as the Constitution, from a historical standpoint it is the same document.
