don't let things like job, money or a gf define your life/life quality. one good friend is enough you need to have a happy life, the rest is up to you. make experiences, create memories. travel to nice places, get educated, be the best person you can be.
no gf here either, but since i started doing stuff anyway, although alone, my life has been getting better.

Nice. There's a very high chance that you've fixed someones fault that I've logged haha.

Quick query, so many times I get ADSL customers with issues and the first thing they say is "NBN is coming", I'm like 90% sure that some of those techs (the ones installing the infrastructure) accidentally fuck up some peoples lines. Can you confirm this at all? I'm just curious haha

If you have no education and can learn how to successfully break away from your social retardedness, do go into sales. Besides dealing drugs it's the quickest way for guys under 30 to get their hands on some life-changing money. I still browse /b/ and get high and be lazy and shit but I bust ass for a week and it can allow me to sit on my ass for 2-3 months. Was earning a PhD, was 4 years in and my research was still going nowhere. I made the mistake of joining a brand new lab and was the first batch of grad students for a new professor. It was super ambitious protein design work trying to re-engineer the purpose of enzymes. It all worked in the molecular simulations but never worked in the real world. After 4 years it still looked like I had 4 years to go to get my PhD. My options were switch labs and start over from square 1 or get my master's degree by writing a short paper over my failed research. I took the masters.

Worked at home depot for almost a year just so I could survive while searching for a real job using my masters. Finally got a job at this biotech company starting at about 35K. I've done really well at the company over the past 2.5 years and optimized a lot of their work and gotten 3 raises which is how I'm now at 50K.

My committee didn't want a thesis on failed experiments. My thesis basically would have been "Molecular simulations are bullshit".

I could have stuck it out but I don't regret leaving. I should have done mechanical engineering. I was torn between molecular biology and mechanical engineering when I was a freshman. I went with biology because I figured it was a new and upcoming field that would grow.

But at my biotech job I have now I'm the expert on all the robotics we work with and have been able to almost double the throughput of the lab by optimizing all the robotics so much. I'm honestly more of a mechanical engineer/robotics programmer than a molecular biologist. But the biology background is what lets me know how to optimize everything. I have cut back the waste and improved the speed on all the reactions we do. It's a good fit for my skill set and I think I'll be getting another raise soon. I'm saving the company several times my salary every year in the efficiency improvements I'm making.

They have sent me to Europe twice this year to research new robotic systems. So that is a perk. Been to Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland all paid for by the company, and that's just in 2016.

It's kinda less for you, actually.

That stuff is taken a lot less seriously, there is less funding for it, and a lot less demand for teaching positions.

I do philosophy because I enjoy it and am relatively good at it. The career path, even for someone with a top degree like mine, is still really rocky and unstable.

Law allows me to make fuck you money, with relative stability, and I can still read and write philosophy on my own time.

History of Philosophy and Practial Ethics are barely "analytic philosophy" in the normal dry
boring sense. I hate that shit too, but that's mostly the domain of metaphysics, metaethics, and epistemology right now.

I'm also going to be doing law in the US. The market is only rough for lawyers who didn't go to great schools. I'm not planning on going from Oxford to Joe's School O' Law in rural Missouri somewhere, I'm only applying to the top 6-7 best schools.

That's what I said.

I have great networking skills, and I'm VERY VERY good at data analysis.

But, I'm an engineer in title only for now. However, that title looks really good on a resume and I get a LOT of exposure to different types of engineering and process because my lab is right in the middle of all of it.

I happened to find a company with a need for 1 additional person in their tiny lab. We run a staff of maybe 8 people in the lab who are responsible for the support of a company that employs 5000... And I'm the chemist. Which is scary when shit goes wrong and you're tasked with identifying the issue.

If this does anything for you, in an average work week I analyze with/maintain: FTIR, qFTIR, TGA, DSC, STD, DMA, GC, IC, py-GCMS, UV-VIS, and a variety of auto-titrators, oh, and don't forget AAS. SO much flame. We'll have an ICP-OES within six months as well... I feel like sherlock holmes most days trying to track down the sources of contamination, identify the contaminants, and engage process engineers to resolve issues.

What were you studying, Anon? I'm in Logistics and Support Chain Management so your job seems kinda what I'd possibly be doing once I am finished with school.

You sir are literally everything wrong with the Millennial Generation.

>Friends and family are all I need in life. You can't measure success in $$$.

Meanwhile actually successful people are paying all your state assistance checks. Covering your rent, iPhone bills, groceries, utilities, and probably your fucking buss passes. While you fuck around all day on social media and work on your immeasurable successes.

How many of you programmers learned it without a degree. I'm wondering if I could teach myself programming in my free time and avoid going back to school.

Does the lack of a degree from an accredited school hurt you when looking for jobs?

I would like to think that if I work at it several hours a week maybe in a couple years I could pivot to a career in programming. I really can't afford/'don't want to leave my current career and go back to school.

I seem to be pretty good with computers already, I feel like I would be pretty good at programming. So far I have just learned the very basics of C++.
