Weapons for amtgard are really easy to make, get graphite golf core shafts, mega pool noodle from walmart and some DAP and a cloth cover and you are good to go, shields are a bit harder but if you can get the solid pieces of foam you can cut out the center for a pvc handle, wrap it up with cloth tape and put a cloth covering over the shield and you are good to go!

I play Amtgard. Kingdom of Northern Lights. Mithril Hills. I stopped playing after 6 years cuz guess what? LARP isn't that fun anymore.

Now you go and you get yelled at by 50 year old men for not following their perception of the rules.
Take for example weapon covers. in the official rules of play it says weapons must be covered in a durable opaque cloth cover.
One of our guys ties the ends of his covers in a little knot, and he does the same to his throwing daggers. Apparently, these weapons are not legal.
Our GMR (guildmaster of reeves) says that "the knots violate the weapon safety guidelines in the rules of play, so you can't use them". I was on the newbie's side and asks him to look in the book for confirmation of it's illegality.
Of course he wouldn't. He knew he was wrong and insisted that since he was the GMR that his word was correct and final.
Well I looked it up later that day and confirmed that it says no where in the rules that cloth covers must be smooth, without bumps, creases, or otherwise. But, since he's the GMR, I couldn't do anything.
The biggest problem is that our Reeves (basically referees on the field) abuse their power. If they make a call and you say anything to them, even "hey can you confirm that for me please" they will just straight up kick you off the field.
If you try to discuss it with them afterward they are extremely defensive, yell, and generally act hostile towards you without resolving anything. This particularly irritates me because a lot of the time their calls are just wrong, because it's extremely easy to become reeve qualified.
They give you the test sheet, the book, and sit you down at the table to take the test. All the damn answers to the test are in the rules of play, so it doesn't test your knowledge of the rules at all.
Don't know if it's like this at other places, but it's like this here. A lot.

I stopped eventually after I hurt my shoulder swinging a top-heavy axe.
Usually I'd have a kite shield that would protect me from shoulder to knee paired witha sword with a 2 foot "blade". The sword was named ankle bitter because I had a tendency to sweep people's legs. Sometimes though I would use a 5.5 foot spear instead.
