If someone I knew got shot by one or other of these groups, they'd either have to be incredibly unlucky or I'd expect they'd been mixing with some really unpleasant characters.

The definitions all found of assault rifles so far are not something you an just buy. You need special credentials and approval from law enforcement.

I still don't believe the word assault rifle is needed. It is redundant and describes things that already had more specific and accurate descriptions.
A somebody in 1930 would understand what a select fire carbine is. That's what all the descriptions I'm seeing of "assault rifle" are today. A select fire carbine.
select fire means you can choose full auto fire. A carbine is a rifle of intermediate caliber. But that doesn't sound as scary as "assault" rifle.

It was a company back in the 50s and 60's. I believe they mostly did aircraft engineering but they branched into guns.
Eugene Stoner worked for them and was the engineer that came up with the AR-10, which evolved into the AR-15. The AR-15 further evolved into the M-16 and M-4.
The design for the AR-15 is now in the public domain. Thats why it is so popular. Hundreds of companies make parts for it now and since they all adhere to the same design specs the parts can be mixed and matched like legos. That's why the gun is so popular. It can be customized basically to infinity,
