I just put a gtx28 with an AM manifold to give the engine some oomph at high rpm and now i think imma die every time it comes on boost. Fucking love it. For 1500-2000 USD you can get a very decent vehicle on craigslist, but you have to choose! You won't get it all. You will find people getting rid of bullshit you don't want that's bad on the outside and inside, but that's not the problem. Those are easy to decline.
After a few weeks of looking you will get better at it and you will notice your choices are either find cars with good bodies and shitty engines and transmissions or find cosmetically poor vehicles with good hearts.
Now, it should be obvious which you should be buying between those two types, but you have to be proactive in your search. When you find a vehicle that looks to match your criteria, research that specific vehicle in and out online to know the engine options and everything so you are informed when you talk to the buyer.
It's not really easy, and it's time consuming, but that's why you can still get awesome deals on Craigslist and other places, because most people are too dim and just want to push a button in a car vending machine (used car dealership) and get a car that costs too much for what you get..
TL;DR: Research and use perception and insight, not impulse or desperation.

Buy an ex-cop car (Crown Victoria) from a city auction if you live in America. They might have a considerable amount of miles on them, it'll be plain, and it's not gonna be shiny and detailed like a car from a dealership would be, but you'll know that it was well taken care of. Crown Vics are used for cop cars and taxis because of how damn reliable they are. Rear wheel drive with a tuned V8 doesn't hurt either.

Can find a Lil Honda in good shape with that. Late 90s, parts are cheap if you're handy. Learn basic maintenence and you'll have a reliable car for a decent price. I used to drive a 2002 3.2TL. Good grocery getter with some luxury, but god damn is it a boring car. No manual option and front wheel drive a fun car do not make. I'd rather take a manual RWD car with a 2.0 rather than a boring luxo barge, but at least driving that car taught me that.
Right now I drive a 2.0 Mazda 3. Just a cheapo car until I save up for something fun, maybe a 370Z. I'll post the car I had right before, a 1986 Nissan 200SX. That was my most fun car, but still nothing compared to my motorcycle.

Like, I commonly see between 1.5-3 liter engines from europeans and british, but in the US it's more common to have more volume, even 4, or 5 liter engines in consumer vehicles. Not even on performance cars, just in general.
