OP here's a question if you're still there. I'm wondering if it's crazy to think of myself as Jewish. I was raised Baptist, though my family was never fervently religious, but around the time of college I learned my family may- MAY- have had a Jewish connection a few generations back while in New Jersey before moving South.
It's not so much a religious connection that I feel, although Judaism's more austere and simple theological worldview makes more sense, as it is a kind of identity. Again, nobody raised me Jewish and none of my relatives ever claim to be or practice Judaism. It's just something I have always felt.

I'm not an authority but I think if you undergo Orthodox conversion the Orthodox will recognize you, but unless you wanted to emigrate to Israel or something there's no reason to do that unless you just wanted to be Orthodox. My understanding is it's against the rules for Jews to disparage your Judaism, but I'm sure it happens or there might not be a rule about it.
To me if the occasional person looked down on me, that wouldn't really bother me, that will happen in life anyway, though it might be a little galling to disparage me as a Jew when I actively chose this life and sought it out- why should birth confer superior status? Anyway, that wouldn't be that big a deal as long as the majority were welcoming to me, which I've always understood to be the case. And has been my experience around Jews.
