OP, depends on the car. Used to be that manual meant extra gears and much more control over where your revs were at any given moment, but not so much anymore. Autos usually feature more gears now and many manufaturers use excellent shift logic to keep the engine where you want it, especially when combined with selectable drive modes on certain cars. Factor in advancements like dual-clutch automatics and autos make a good case against manuals.So anymore autos will tend to be faster and not suffer from the drawbacks they used to like long shift times, lack of overlap in the rev range and less gears.
But dont get an automatic off road vehicle. That just sucks.

If you're spending >250,000 on a car the automatic transmission is better. Anything under that then the manual gearbox is the way to go in terms of control, fuel economy and maintenance costs. Any other answer is just raw feelings. f

You shouldn't use your gears to engine brake. Brake pads are a lot cheaper to replace. Don't ride your brakes constantly on a downhill run, brake in bursts so they don't overheat and you'll be fine.

if i did big miles id want an auto to save on gear changes / clutch use in traffic also id want an auto if i was towing alot.
manuals are great and give you full control of whats going on in the gearbox, id never have a 'sports car' with an auto box i think that'd ruin the experience for me.
