They have only just begun including filler episodes (which are still entertaining), and the old episodes that some called filler all contained or showed at least one development in Steven's power, or the gems characters.
Steven isn't dumb, he's a kid who has actually gone through a really mature arc, but you retards who just consume media without thinking wouldn't notice that.
The gems as a race are very unique, and are interesting. Their gay shit hasn't been forced at all, and if you watch the show, every "gay" thing happens for a good reason. They've actually held back on showing the gay stuff more than you'd think.

Connects, sure. But it serves no significant purpose unless it ties into the main plot.
For example, episodes like Frybo and Onion Trade introduced aspects of gemtech to show the audience what kind of aliens the gems were. Townie episodes were a way of introducing elements to the show without overusing the main characters for generally inconsequential stuff. Now townie episodes feel like an obligation on behalf of the Crew, like they make episodes for the sake of including Townies instead of adding anything to the show. I'm almost certain that is the way they approach making every season. They feel obligated to create episode plots that involve townies.

I actually think the Steven Lars dynamic is decent. Lars is a good foil for Steven. Anything that includes Lars rarely feels like filler. Restaurant Wars, Future Boy Zoltron, and Kiki's Pizza Delivery Service though all feel like filler.
At least Drop Beat Dad tied in with Greg's past and served to introduce Greg's new fortune... which I'm still on the fence about. They don't actually seem like they needed to give Greg $10 million. Did they really need the big expensive yaght for Alone At Sea or the fancy hotel room for Mr. Greg? At the very least a much smaller sum of money would have done.

Add that to cringe dialogue and characters like Amethyst who messes with Steven's dad by turning into his wife, you just get a mess.

There is also the time where he fucking trades a weapon that duplicates items. Just gives a weapon that in the wrong hands can destroy cities, kill the economy, and let anyone rule the world. Who does this faggot trade with and for what? He trades with a toddler that can't talk and gets a "guy" (His own "guy" btw) out of the trade. This one action could have ended humanity, or at least killed the whole town. Somehow didn't kill anyone. Probably because Sugar and Carjew Network are to cucked to kill anyone in a reasonable way and not in a song or some crap. And then the gems are like "at least you tried your best. I mean, you did nearly have us, your home town, and possibly the world destroyed, but it's k". Then there is him nearly starving to death with his girlfriend because of his bubble and the time where he forgets some McGuffin for a temple, which then gets destroyed because he couldn't even remember to bring the McGuffin. No kid is this fucking stupid.

I think you just dont understand why certain things happen, and where the show is now. The monster of the week format has been dropped, and even then, those episodes (like the one where him and Connie are trapped in a bubble) give exposition for how Steven's powers work, as well as developing the show's characters. Amethyst turning into rose was also for character development, but hey, not everyone can understand that as well as someone with an average IQ.

Steven, being a very innocent kid up until recently, is of course gullible, and naive. In the bubble episode he did not trap them on purpose, as this was a new power that he couldn't yet control. You should watch the series up to where it is now, because Steven has since undergone development where he is more competent and mature than at the beginning of the series.
