Why do white people like metal so much?
Because metal is based on classical/concert music and because good metal is highly creative and highly skilled and talks about cool stuff
well tell me about how black metal sounds like blues. It doesn't sound bluesy since the early 80's. This is like saying jazz sounds like cavemen banging stones and sticks just because all music evolved from cavemen banging stones and sticks
(CAN'T WAKE UP)
Stop being moronic douchebags and post music
First album I really felt connected to was Korn's take a look in the mirror
Listened to it when it was first released when I was 6
Well said, I've been listening to Orden Ogan since my girlfriend left me for some hick down in Arkansas.
Fucking trips man

> nonchalantly shitting all over -core genres
I have a serious question (yeah i know it's on /b/)..
Why don't they play rock/metal aynomre? Is it because of marketing reasons like "it doesn't sell like easy-listening songs" or is it because some of the lyrics make you think? And it also applies to hip-hop, instead of playing rappers with decent thought-provoking lyrics they only play rap about bitches and hoes.
Something is fishy about the music industry and I'm curious what do anons think about that
>parents don't buy god hates us all for their kids.
>radios play what parents consider buying kids
>radios play justin bieber
>10yo's pussy tingle
>money rolling in
yeah man all cultures are strictly homogenous, especially in 2016
never thought about it that way..but how about over-sexualised songs with twerking and smonk weed? are they kid-friendly? Or is it just another unrelated market segment that just buys that shit?
Well some jigaboo living in the ghetto won't relate to songs about "muh epic dragonslaying we wuz vikings", of course he will like songs about swag cocaine or whatever they rap about.
Oh and the instrumentation is too complex for their 50 IQ brains
Because metal is freedom. No need to worry about album sales, public opinions or anything like that. You can compose any kind of music, take influences from anything, mash genres together...
>Yeah uh, I like Warhammer 40k. Can I make metal out of it?
>Cool! What about Tolkien's books?
Done countless times!
>Those Eastern Orthodox liturgies sound kinda cool.
Make metal out of them!
>Metal sounds pretty nice but I can't play it, because I can only play sitar.
That's not an excuse!
>I can't decide, if I want to listen to metal or something else.
Doesn't matter! You can listen everything at the same time!
Metal can be pretty much anything.
Metal hasn't used pentatonic scale or blues riffs since zep and acdc. And they're hardly metal. Most metal is played in drop d and uses chromatic scales and major chords. That's not blues. Almost all lead guitar is shredding based on a major chord with tapping and blinding speed. None of that is blues. You're still thinking Jimmy page, who is great but not metal. Metal took heavier riffs from Sabbath and zep, sped them up and put them in major chords to the point where they sound more like Wagner. They also took Anglo-Saxon themes Robert plant played with and stuck with it. And plant's homages to his ethnic heritage (think immigrant song) was never blues inspired. Today's metal is nothing like old hard rock and zero in common with blues. All the blues bending and riffs have been discarded by the shredders. You can still hear all that in George thorogood if you want
Philosophically, no. Musically, maybe if there was more screaming and recording it from the other side of a concrete wall. Then yes, same thing basically.
In all honesty, never considered the comparison but I can see it musically speaking.
If you look on youtube metalica has videos that get a few 100 mil views
Slipknot gets a little below a 10 mil
Black keys has 60 mil
The strokes has 60 mil
Arcade fire had 20 mil
Ffdp has 90 mil
It seems like radio isn't as popular
No. Metal did spawn as an offshoot of rock, all the way back to blues even.. At least black metal, which has similar roots to most types of metal, as far as I know. That's not to say though that there aren't other roots. Metal has roots in all kinds of music.
But, rock (which was derived from blues) is one of the most significant types of music that metal is formed out of obviously.
Metal has been dismissed since the earliest days and was never on radio unless one of them sold out and made a pop song like priest did or the scorpions did. Bands relied on album sales and concerts. And the fans are crazy loyal. 20 -30 years. With all generations present at concerts. Radio? Fuck radio. Unless you got Sirius you will never hear metal on the radio
More importantly, music as a more literal outlet for aggression is what connects it to black music. Black music was raw and in-your-face - the antithesis of the classical music metal nerds love to reference.
While i agree, you neglected the ideological aspect of metal. That certainly stems from rock. Look at venom's influence on black metal for example. The music of black metal just changed to reflect the ideology.
Were still trying to differentiate between early metal like metallica, which did spawn off of rock, but modern metal has no connection to that.
Tell me how this is blues and not classical?
Thats one aspect of that scene. The biggest influence on that was Sabbath who toyed with that imagery but never fully embraced it. Page bought Crowleys mansion and did little to dissuade talk that he was part of the occult. That's toying, marketing. That other bands would embrace as their schtick should not surprise anyone. You have to distinguish yourself somehow. And btw, the great blues legend Robert Johnson sang about selling his soul to the devil to become an immortal guitar player. Check out crossroads, his original or Clapton's cover
It all stemmed from the ideology. Black metal was everything that was wrong with the world. They burned down churches for the lulz. They desecrated grave yards because that's what black metal was. Then they shot themselves or went to prison for killing a bandmate or some random gay guy because, hey, metal and Norway's sweet ass murder laws (8 years for killing a gay dude because he didn't like gays and wanted to kill someone, unlike noisy-ass varg who just loves the spotlight and got significantly more). They even intentionally made their recordings sound shitty. Fucking black metal. Black metal was a lot of the metal ideology in it's purest form. There is a metal hierarchy and black metal reigns supreme and has turned into a meme because they are the ones that actually went balls deep into the world and just fucked shit up.
Death metal is just a catharsis for white collar workers. Prog is college grads. Heavy metal is old folks. Folk is just alcoholics.
Post some metal from your countries lads and let us explore new bands.
Some Dutch bands:
i like the variety. from melodic to noise you can find so much under the tag "metal"
songs that are over before they begin
and stuff you will probably never hear through the end.
you should not JUST listen to metal. its very "angry" "rebellious" but anger and hate are strong emotions everyone should "express?" or feel or get to know better
sorry for my bad english.
Same, I've really tried to listen to a handful of recommended ones, but I can't get into it.
>inb4 yu jus havn heard GUD medal yet
It's not for me. What I can tell you is that besides country music, metal fans are the most pretentious, bitchy fans of any genre.
No... Just no. You cannot deny the progression of blues to rock to metal. There are many other influences and what we hear today shares nothing beyond the name, but you stupid fuck, metal owes itself to the genres that created a world where it could sprout into existence. To say otherwise is to deny history you flaming fuckbag of saggy suckhole.
Different responder here. Yes you are right but the tie in isn't as linear as you seem to suggest. The metal bands cherry picked from hard rockers and left behind everything that is identified with blues. So, yes guys with long hair play electric guitars loud and on distortion and sing about sex etc. But the chord progression, tempo, scales are different. Even the once eponymous Chuck Berry riff that every lead guitar player relied on including ace frehley and Duane allman and SRV has completely vanished from metal
My other posts elaborated on the lack of linearity in that transition more. You still cannot deny that those genres created a world where our metal could congeal into it's depressing transcendent existence. There are influences in metal from everything everywhere if you look. In terms of the literal music theory, you're right. Those rifts are long gone. They were only able to leave because they were there in the first place because some particular genres were there to create a genre that would allow them the be there and then leave.
Basically just envision a sigh where the entire chest and upper body move beyond what is normal as if trying to convey that you're retarded beyond words through what are essentially acts of god.
because is fucking brutal
there was this one chick from china in my course and she saw me one day wearing my old metallica shirt she asked if i was into metal. i told her and she went on how she was a metalfan too. so i asked her what she's usually listening...
>oh and not so much guitars ...
uh yea... okay. so asian.. nothing against cthonic though
No Blind Guardian?
What kind of metal thread is this?
I grew up around metal, and have actively gone to shows for the last 10 years (24 now.) Based on my casual observations, the types of people who like metal fall into several groups:
>1. Nerds who like it because of fantasy/sci-fi/historical themes. Rarely go to shows, never rek shit, generally unathletic.
>2. Deepfags who relate to "emotional" lyrics. Will often talk about their emotions and such. Take themselves and the culture seriously. Most are skellies who will not rek shit. Muscular/fat ones get super violent as a way to let out their "emotions." Super sensitive. As teenager likely listened to a lot of MCR, and naturally progressed to "harder" stuff.
>3. People into it for cheese/gore/tits/alcohol. Don't take themselves or the culture seriously, but enjoy it for what it is. Realize that its slightly juvenile. Generally into horror/action movies. The pit will be made up mostly of these people.
I fall into the third group, and generally like these people best. They get along easily with nonmetal people, and generally have some social skills. The first group is good for vidya, but little else. The second group is cringy af, and all in all a downer to hang out with.
"they" do. There's a huge metal scene throughout the world. XM radio has a range from 80's metal to current nu-metal stuff. Check out Liquid Metal channel on XM for the more modern stuff.
Local underground scenes are also huge. Metal is classic. So what if all of the posers took off to other styles of music? What's left is the hard core fans, many of which are in their own bands that fucking rule now.
Some local bands pushing hard in the San Diego CA scene:
-Ruines Ov Abbadon
Rock and roll is godly
Metal is a bunch of bullshit
yeah black sabbath started out as bluesrock, but bands like skálmold, solstafir, iron maiden, amon amarth
early metallica if you listen to songs like the call of ktulu and orion and the like
you'll notice that a way more classical influence takes place
Indeed. In disposable heros, you get a false ending, which just reminds me of Beethovens 2nd movement of his 9th symphony. One of the reasons I love metal. So disparate, yet so the same.
>don't play any instruments or even understand how music is made
>"Why come white people like metal?"
I see all ages at local shows. Old crusty dudes, young kids, all sorts of people from all walks of life.
It was a trip seeing 2o y.o. kids get down to Cannibal Corpse. Especially since they would be considered "old school" metal. It's pretty unique that there is an appreciation for the roots in the genre.
Being a musician active in the scene here in San Diego currently, I have met and worked with some incredible musicians. I have played with some of my heros - Venom Inc. (new venom name), Soulfly (don't really like them but Max Cavalera tho), and others.
I consider myself lucky to be my age playing music that is still relevant to all ages of fans. And some of these fans are just solid die hard guys and gals who love the music like no other.
Haven't met too many strictly spanish speaking bands, but there are a bunch of guys I know that are of mexican descent that are active right now.
Nobody cares what you are as long as your bring it.
Also, Mexico is a huge market for metal. Shows in Mexico go off like no other. They eat that shit up.
Fucking metal bands paint themselves into a stylistic corner
Example: A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine
Lennon could have easily done a heavy version of Imagine if he had wanted - he never limited himself to one style
But A Perfect Circle, that was the ONLY way they could have done that song; they could have never pulled it off using Lennon's arrangement
you're wrong. 3 groups? C'mon.
How about the old guy, only fan of megadeth, slayer and early ´'tallica which is like 6 feet tall and always stands in the backrow with his lady but knows all the lyrics. Don't think that guy goes in "group 3".
That's not 100% true. Plenty of metal musicians use the classical scales instead of Blues scales. Great examples are trivium, John petrucci, van Halen (not exactly the most metal but you get my point). Most 'classical' metal musicians use a diminished scale of some kind and usually a straight 4/4 or 3/4 time, and no 12 bar licks
Cause I'm about that terror propaganda.
There's so much good stuff. I've been trying to get into music with violins but don't know what to look for.
And the only downside of metal is all the shit that tries to be brutal and nothing else. It seems so cringey to me.
I actually just broke out my old violin and did a violin / metal song haha.
As far as other bands that are doing it.....hmmm... There's a local band in San Diego that has a killer cellist, and I heard some Ukranian metal act from a few years ago that incorporated kind of gypsy / folky biolins. Pretty cool. Unfortunately I can't remember their names right now..
That guy is totally group 3. I've talked to that guy on several occasions. Generally we talk about oldschool metal and horror while playing gay chicken as his wife looks on in a mixture of disgust and barely contained laughs.
The last time I talked to one of those guys he ended up taking off his shirt and bear hugging me. I lifted my legs off the ground, and his wife buried her face in her hands out of shame/contained laughter.
Any societal members who are into stress will like metal. Modern societies encourage and breed stress as part and parcel of their economic paradigm; so, I don't see metal music going by the wayside anytime soon. Back when I was young (70s, 80s, 90s) I appreciated stress a lot more, and the metal was better then. You young whippersnappers now are on such high stress levels that you wouldn't know good music from an exceptionally gory rekt thread.
>in b4 go back to your Zeppelin oldfag.
>in b4 Zeppelin isn't metal.
Duh. But at least it was music.
Noise is not music.
It just caters to your need for more stress. A need that is being cultivated in you by the very elite that you think your music is symbolically rebelling against. Sad, really; but you'll grow up someday -- about the time your own kids become teenagers.
Now you /b/tards are going to make me break out some Rage Against The Machine just to drown out some of the poor excuses for music that were linked in this thread, that are still clanging in my head.
Less stress is good, /b/ros.
well if you think so, still would that make an own group lol. Also, another different group would be generally people who play instruments/in a band themselves, because they DO take the genre serious but aren't any kind of group 1 or 2 either, but also don't exactly belong to 3.
you cant categorize all metal as the same, there are a lot of flavors out there, and some are I would agree to be a lot of noise and nothing else.
I'll see your trips and raise it a Specific Spangler.
>pic related is my fantasy fap when about to piss metal.
