Metal hasn't used pentatonic scale or blues riffs since zep and acdc. And they're hardly metal. Most metal is played in drop d and uses chromatic scales and major chords. That's not blues. Almost all lead guitar is shredding based on a major chord with tapping and blinding speed. None of that is blues. You're still thinking Jimmy page, who is great but not metal. Metal took heavier riffs from Sabbath and zep, sped them up and put them in major chords to the point where they sound more like Wagner. They also took Anglo-Saxon themes Robert plant played with and stuck with it. And plant's homages to his ethnic heritage (think immigrant song) was never blues inspired. I grew up around metal, and have actively gone to shows for the last 10 years (24 now.) Based on my casual observations, the types of people who like metal fall into several groups:
>1. Nerds who like it because of fantasy/sci-fi/historical themes. Rarely go to shows, never rek shit, generally unathletic.
>2. Deepfags who relate to "emotional" lyrics. Will often talk about their emotions and such. Take themselves and the culture seriously. Most are skellies who will not rek shit. Muscular/fat ones get super violent as a way to let out their "emotions." Super sensitive. As teenager likely listened to a lot of MCR, and naturally progressed to "harder" stuff.
>3. People into it for cheese/gore/tits/alcohol. Don't take themselves or the culture seriously, but enjoy it for what it is. Realize that its slightly juvenile. Generally into horror/action movies. The pit will be made up mostly of these people.
I fall into the third group, and generally like these people best. They get along easily with nonmetal people, and generally have some social skills. The first group is good for vidya, but little else.The second group is cringy af, and all in all a downer to hang out with.

I see all ages at local shows. Old crusty dudes, young kids, all sorts of people from all walks of life.
It was a trip seeing 2o y.o. kids get down to Cannibal Corpse. Especially since they would be considered "old school" metal. It's pretty unique that there is an appreciation for the roots in the genre.
Being a musician active in the scene here in San Diego currently, I have met and worked with some incredible musicians. I have played with some of my heros - Venom Inc. (new venom name), Soulfly (don't really like them but Max Cavalera tho), and others.
I consider myself lucky to be my age playing music that is still relevant to all ages of fans. And some of these fans are just solid die hard guys and gals who love the music like no other.

That's not 100% true. Plenty of metal musicians use the classical scales instead of Blues scales. Great examples are trivium, John petrucci, van Halen (not exactly the most metal but you get my point). Most 'classical' metal musicians use a diminished scale of some kind and usually a straight 4/4 or 3/4 time, and no 12 bar licks
