but to address the issue you've got your panties in a bunch about, the only way in or out of the matrix is through a hard line that they create that goes through a telephone line. that's why when they enter, they're standing holding a phone (has to be a land line) and why the only way they can get out is by answering a call from a specific phone that the operator designates as the port. if the line is cut without your mind being able to exit through this port back into your physical brain, then the body dies because the body cannot live without the mind. it's like if you upload data to a cloud server but then your connection to the server (the internet) gets severed, you can't access the data anymore. (obviously it will still be there when you get back online, but that's not how the matrix works)

I'd say the most reasonable explanation for that is that just like the body needs the mind to live, the mind also needs the body (specifically the physical brain) in order to exist. While the mind is in the matrix it is still connected to the physical body through the hard line, it is never actually separate from the body, so then the plug is pulled the connection is severed and the mind "dies" just like the body.

In regards to the both the body and digital persona expiring when the plug is pulled prematurely, it seems like flawed logic to me, and here's why; morpheus explains how the matrix supposedly works in the first movie, and the way he explains it suggests not that a 'copy' is uploaded elsewhere, but rather that sensory input is streamed directly to the brain, and that all of the processing (at least in that respect) takes place there. It makes no sense for someone being unplugged to die, it's far more likely that they'd just slip into a coma, given there'd have to be some on-board got between would have to exist to shut down physical sensory function whilst the link was online, and it's unlikely that the machines would choose to lose a host over a system malfunction (faulty wiring, or other technical issues), given they could be kept suspended and reinserted. How the hell else would they perform maintenance on the farms, if everyone died when they shut something down to fix it.

I get what you're saying though, but I do think it makes sense within the context of the movie's universe. Morpheus says the body cannot live without the mind, so your suggestion that it would make more sense for them to slip into a coma is incorrect (at least within the movie's universe) since the mind's (consciousness) connection to the brain is being severed. In the movie's universe, it seems that the mind/consciousness is "in" the Matrix, entering through the hard line, but it is still connected to the brain by said hard line, so when that connection is severed the mind and the body both die because they cannot live without each other. Think of it like the mind is an old-style scuba diver getting its oxygen through a tube that goes to the surface. If the tube is severed, the scuba diver is cut off from the oxygen and dies.

First of all there is an antagonist: The google guy. He's not evil, but more like a crazy scientist who experiments on machines that might have developed a conciousness which is essentially torture.
