AR-15 is dogshit for general home defense.
High velocity rounds going right through the walls and beyond. More useful for a ranged defense against something more siege style.
Your .45 is dated. I had a S&W .45 for a long time, learned to shoot with it. Switched to a Glock 19 both for capacity and the fact that if you're trying to induce hydrostatic shock in an attacker, both guns are effective. .45 has a nice slow heavy hit, while a glock has a nice fast light hit, but they'll both kill an attacker just the same if you hit an artery. Most guns will. Why would you limit yourself to 7 rounds? I'm a great shot, but I'd still rather have backup just in case.
Back to the AR-15, you're better served with a nice little pump 12 ga. Load it up with something smaller than deer but bigger than bird. Won't go through the walls as easily, patterns so you can still get hits under pressure, and won't jam.
I trust my Mini 14 more than my AR15, but I'd still take a manual fed short barrel shotgun for CC if I didn't have a handgun.

Sheetrock is pretty thin when it comes to projectiles, pistol and rifle rounds travel farther through a house than shotgun rounds that are for home defense. Plus have you ever tried to aim a pistol or rifle in the dark in your house, they are firearms that require you to aim, because you are firing one round at a time, that leaves a lot of room for error in accuracy. Shotguns can be pointed in general directions and be affective. Take some home defense classes.

.40 cals are high pressure rounds, much more than 9mm and 45 cal. The muzzle velocity in a .40 cal would definitely exclude it from being the ideal home defense firearm. As for short barrel, it takes a lot of practice to be efficient with a short barrel pistol. The sight picture between the front aight and rear sight is shorter, therefore, shorter barrels are more difficult to aim and hit a target accurately.

Okay, for one, short barrel and high pressure do not mix or help each other out in any way shape or form. Shorter barrels are harder to control and usually the shooter experiences more recoil from the firearm. Higher pressure of the round will make the firearm travel upward more, which makes recovery longer to regain a sight picture making it less accurate. Golden rules to all firearms: the smaller the firearm, the more recoil and less accurate it will be. The bigger the firearm, the more bulky and heavy it will be. Have you ever wondered why women do not like to shoot snub nose .380's, because it only allows the shooter to have a four finger grip in the shooting hand, harder to aim and the recoil can be felt more because of the weaker grip.

It could take multiple shots from a pistol to make this happen, vital organs have to be hot and bleeding has to happen quick and fast. I'd rather stick with my dad's old colt 1911 that he gave me. I prefer it over the shotgun or any rifle due to the short barrel being more ideal for close quarters and can be fired with one hand leaving the other free.
