I like the first one more, but I think one of the reasons I do is because since the first game was technically not finished, my imagination filled in quite a bit more of the story while 2's story is okay.
To be fair though, there's more direction in the second one so it's easier to figure out what you have to do, but even still, the game can be quite cryptic in what it expects you to do at times.

Honestly I think this might be the best Square game on PSX. I know that might be controversial opinion but their more famous pure jRPG titles are not as gameplay-oriented as Vagrant Story. Its an actual game as opposed to an interactive story and its a damn good game. The crafting system is simple enough that its useful and fun, not one where you need to study a guide to even know wtf to do. Overall this game is super underappreciated. The """""story""""" is absolute garbage though, it doesn't even make sense.

Loved it, very enjoyable experience even if the translation was shoddy with its terminology. Disc 2 was also a pain in pacing. But Story and OST more than makes up for it, I had no idea what i was expecting when I first tried this game. Played all the Xenosaga series and Xenoblade too, they are cool but they didnt satisfy my Xenogears fix. Check out the "Perfect Works" translation, Xenogears is only Episode 5 of the unfinished series.

I enjoyed it but the difficulty is tough at times with certain enemies thrown about, I remember those flying goblins that had massive defense resisted pierce and slash but had slight water/blunt weakness forced me to make a blunt mace with high water attribute stacked, which took a good hour since my first attempt was a botched failure even with all buffs casted. Definitely underrated game from Square though.
