What finally got it to work was focusing on a single point. Pic related, it's the first one I saw.
See if you can see depth to it, if you can, you are on the right track. This is an easy one.

The "hidden object" stereograms tend to be straight-eye, and the side by side images are usually cross-eye. Using the opposite, different way of viewing one will reverse the depth effect.
Side by side images can be viewed properly by swapping the images, but the other type can't be changed as far as I know.

I'm surprised at how horrible people seem to be at these. I can see every single one I've tried. Used to practice on chain link fences and those lunch tables with the holes when I was younger. It's cool when you get it and your eyes relax and you can look around the image keeping focus. I learned how to control the focus in my eyes and I have 20/10 vision, dunno if related.

On the side by side, hold your hand flat like a blade between your eyes and touch it to your nose. Adjust so both pictures show up as one.
The "blade" removes duplicates of the image and allows you to focus on the center one. It's how the old side by side glasses worked

Cross/double vision and bring overlapping images into congruence. (Look towards your dominate eye-side.) You may have to rotate your head or a teen a little in order to get the overlap correct.

Need to relax, focus your eyes so they are blurry, leave them blurry and the image will show up. Your eyes will want to focus on the image as you 1st see it, you need to resist this and keep them blurry. People focus on 1 spot to do this. Once you see the image poop up you can then relax your eyes an look around and you've tricked your eyes into focusing on the image.
Some people think its fake, others are just trolling. just keep trying, you'll get it.

holy fucking shit. i finally figured it out. usually i was only able to do the side-by-side ones. but now i can actually see them.
when doing it, it looks like there's two layers, with the one closest having a sort of hole cut out of it, allowing you to see different things underneath. my only question is, is there any way to know what exactly it is that i'm looking at? some of them are hard to tell what they are, even though i'm able to see the silhouette.

Put your finger infront of your face and focus on it. slowly move it closer to the screen until you see it look its 3d in your peripheral. Pull your finger out of focus so your eyes are still focused as if it were still infront of you. Your eyes should try to automatically refocus the image to 3d, but you have to keep your eyes perfectly relaxed and let it come together in your vision till its focused.

if youre a noob at cant just do it on command, one magic eye book I saw gave a tutorial like so:
put your face directly up to the image and very slowly back away. around the time it stops being blurry from being too close the 3d image will also become apparent. Basically you're trying to focus your eyes on something that is 2x the actual distance of your eyes to the image. For some reason doing it this tutorial way helps many people do that

The nice thing about cross-eye is the the images can be much larger = higher resolution. That's because parallel images can typically only be as far apart as one's eyes: it's very hard to spread your eyes wider.
