It was about half threads with stuff and half people complaining about threads with stuff.
In the very beginning most of the arguing was about how cancerous Animé X Y or Z was and those threads were killing the board.
/b has not changed much with the exception of increasingly impotent raid threads that go nowhere. Mostly because the internet is more inured to our shit, they don't fall for it as much.

Most of the content was original, the majority on the internet weren't 60 year old grandmas living on facebook, it was youth and the wizards. It was just a better place in general the internet.

I'd say the decline began in 2011 when 'memes' became popular and you had people filtering in from the 'cheezburger' network and 9gag looking for some holy ground of 'fresh memes', back then people talked about 4chan as if it was a secret club full of hacking, raids and memes, this influx of people expecting something that /b/ was not began the steady decline of people clinging onto the things they felt /b/ should be about (gore and funny pictures) and demanding that they should be the only things posted about. The final nail in the coffin was in 2014 when the whole gamergate shit kicked off and hotwheelschan became a big thing for about a week.
Since then /b/ has just been this lifeless husk just repeating the same threads and posting the same pictures every day. I'd say up until 2014 you could see some kind of hope for 4chan left, but now it's just generic as fuck with no sign of redemption.

The thing about /b/ is that it used to be a containment board for all topics that didn't already have a board on 4chan. As time went on people would complain about how much of subject 'x' would get posted on /b/ and that all other topics would get pruned as a result. So then /b/ turned into a passive voting process to acquire your own board (see pokemon, my little pony, etc).
Presently, /b/ is an overflow board. In other words, shit that doesn't get acknowledgement in its origin board or when theres already an influx of that same topic in its containment board makes its way here. Thats why you see a lot of trap porn or dick rate threads here. /gif/ only tolerates 'x' amount of gay shit and /soc/ usually has like 2 - 3 dick rate threads at any given time. Also /gif/ is literally just porn: the board which is why you get a lot of ylyl/rekt threads in here.
/b/ literally does what it was designed to do. The problem us that we are running out of content that doesn't already have it's own board.
The only thing I'd like to see get its own containment board now is the g/fur and furry shit. Im tired of scrolling through it for shit thats actually interesting.

one of the best things about older /b/ was the creation of original content - pepes, art, draw threads, poetry and stories. i don't see that much anymore. i think the creative minded people have been drowned out by porn and have left.

Most of the reasons for the decline and fall of not just /b/ but the rest of the boards has been stated. But the underlying thing that caused the decline was the popularity. More people came and did make the site more tame. More people means more content but it's not always good content. The thing I miss the most are the raids. No if there is a raid it's 50 (maybe). The site always had cancer but it was more balanced. Plus most of the original people are older now and maybe lurk once in awhile. Like it or not we are one of the few sites that still pretty much allows content that would get you banned any where else. In a few years we will talk about how great it was on here now. That's the circle of life on here

Shitbrix threads were fun and none of us trusted gifs. We all constantly and simultaneously won and lost The Game (like we just did). Linetrap and Bill Kaulitz were sexuality confusing pop icons, and they were very limited. We didn't have trap threads every 40 seconds.
White Knights were much fewer and could be banned for spoiling fun. "Meme" still held Its original definition of "socially-shared idea and popular culture" rather than "picture with words superimposed". Raids still happened. Things were done for the lulz.
