Cowboy bebop was great because of a combination of good writing and animation quality. It had a well fleshed-out world that felt like a living, breathing space around the characters.
Is it the BEST anime? No, but it was really good.
That being said, just like with any hobby, (music, movies, clothes, etc) there are people that will say it's bad BECAUSE it had such a wide audience. As if its wide exposure somehow cheapens the experience. You know who I'm talking about, right? The type of person that only likes a band when no one has heard of them and if that band hits the mainstream and becomes popular amongst the masses, that person will go on about how they "used to be good" and "they sold out".

Enjoy, my younger brother got me into anime last year. Hadn't really watched any before as had always associated with those weird neck beards with those pillows and shit. We watched Champloo then bebop and then ghost in the shell. Enjoyed all but Champloo was the one I enjoyed the most.

c) was really funny and/or touching, (good script 3)

e) the audience was intended to be people > 18yo, unlike most animes, so it dealt with matters more mature than just gore, tits or growing up in Jap school, (good script 5)
f) it had no superheroes* (with a single exception, but he got pwnd in a single episode anyway), (good script 6)
g) because it had both open beginning and open ending, (good script 7)
h) because Ein was often the most sensible of the entire crew, (good script 8)
i) because it had memorable quotes and events, (good script 9),
etc. etc. etc., and finally,
z) it had great music and visual style, and the CGI etc. weren't overused.
Sam Champ was mediocre at best, and SD is 7/10 for me. Madoka sucked, Trigun sucked, DN sucked, AoT sucked, Naruto sucked, DB(Z) sucked, Berserk sucked, FMA/FMA:B sucked. Most Ghibli anime is 7/10 or 8/10 for me, with the sole exception of HMC. Akira was great, original GitS was great (series was extremely lame). NGE (original one, director's version) was great, but had its flaws, 8+/10. Most things like AoS or Kabaneri just suck. Blue Ex. was 6+/10, DtB was 8/10 (1st season) 6/10 (the rest).
