Who is your favorite drummer, and also who do you consider the most talented percussionist?
>>
>>702751855
I think my favorite drummer is probably Joey Jordison just because I grew up listening to Slipknot and he was always a big inspiration. I think overall the most talented drummer in my eyes is Neil Peart, but that's all my opinion, I'm not saying he IS, just in my eyes as a drummer he is.

>>702752075
Same fag.... Slipknot is a great band.. while i'm not entirely into that form/genre, i respect going with what you love.. and even better... you picked Neil Peart.. whom I also list as my top drummer. That carousel drum set he played just put him over the top.
>>
>>702752453
Hey man, everyone has their own opinion on favorite/best drummer. I wouldn't disagree with your opinion just cause we're 2 different people and have different music influences.
>>
>>702752075
Eww, Peart?

Listen to some Meg White, or Travis Barker. Those are real drummers
>>
>>702752464
Thanks man, I've always loved Slipknot and whenever I say they're my favorite band I always wait to get bashed with "edgy" and shit. It really impresses me that Neil Peart still plays at this age and can play well despite his shoulder and wrist problems I've heard about.

What is your favorite drummer joke?
>>
>>702752569

>>702752801
Meg White... Kek

Some of the best drummers are these studio guys that play on pop songs and R&B shit. Not dudes like Joey Jordison. Peart is fine but anybody who plays progressive rock like that always has the freedom to just go crazy so people think they are better than they are.

Always been a fan of Stanton Moore just because of his creativity.
>>
>>702752806
Be proud of what you love! "Wait and Bleed" (granted, it's probably a corny song for true fans) stays in my rotation despite not being one of my favorite bands/genres.

Neil Peart kills everything. and his fills are ridiculous.
>>
I'm getting drums for Christmas and I'm teaching myself to play. I know rhythms and things such as that I've played many instruments. Are there any bad habits I should try to avoid?
>>
>>702753147
I totally agree with this man, I don't really listen to R&B that much so I don't know much about the drummers behind the beats but they are great musicians that deserve more publicity for their work.
>>
>>702753295
From day one, always practice with a metronome.

Also, always use earplugs. You'll thank yourself later.

Also, grab a book and start going through rudiments. It doesn't sound fun, but you need to have the building blocks in place before you can become the next Benny Greb
>>
>>702753295
Don't use arm, it's all in the wrist. Also look up good practice techniques and proper sticking.
>>
>>702753295
Also let it be said that my current favorite drummer is Josh dun because of his clear enthusiasm and playstyle
>>
>>702753485
This.. While I'm not a drummer.. I spent a significant amount of time behind crew-serve weapons... and ear plugs will save you so much... please do this.
>>
>>702753485
>>702753515
Also thank you because I haven't found any good tips for bad habits starting out.

How does it feel when your bands singer and guitarist get áll the girls.

Funny you say that, currently my friends and I are making a band and they are actually learning bass and guitar while I have played drums for 8 years. But my bass friend has had a share of girlfriends. Guitar friend doesn't see need for them. I've been talking to a girl for a while and she plays guitar and is joining us now.

Get down on some lessons in the beginning. It will at least teach you the basics. I took lessons for like a year and a half when I started and I wish I did it longer.

But I'm lazy with the drums anyway. Much more fun playing with a band than by yourself.
>>
Hi
Just came here to say you should listen to the drum solo in Steely Dan's "Aja" by Steve Gadd. It was improvised and the drum parts you hear throughout the songs were done in 2 takes.
>>
How does it feel to know a machine can be used to replace you?

>inb4 can't do everything, it can.
>inb4 they don't sound as real, nobody knows or cares other than drummers
>>
>>702754118
Looks like your band is going to sound quite terrible :(
>>
>>702754323
That could be said about any instrument pretty much.

Even rappers need a drum kit on tour for show. So it's ok.
>>
>>702754323
Feels bad knowing that you can replace someone's talent with a machine that just does all the sounds. I guess people would rather have a machine than someone who loves doing what they do.
>>
>>702754509
Well any band that has 2 members that are just starting to learn their instruments will be bad at the beginning. Just because they are just learning doesn't mean they will suck forever. Everyone needs to start somewhere man.

>>

>>
How'd ya start playing OP?
>>
>>702756512
That's a good question. I can never truly answer because I never know. I auditioned for percussion in 5th grade for middle school band and played through high school. My cousin give me pieces of 2 drum sets in sophomore year and I played on that and practiced. I also joined pep band and played drums in that. I guess I saw interest in drums around 4th grade cause I thought it was reall interesting.
>>
>>702756760
Man I miss playing in the band in middle/high school

What kinda band are you and your friends making?
>>
Hey OP, do you like my guitar playing and mouthdrumming?

http://vocaroo.com/i/s08ZJqLM6zUZ
>>
>>702756906
We all have the same interest in music which is a mix of rock, punk, grunge, alternative, that sort of stuff. The girl I've been talking to who is joining likes a lot of 70s stuff like Pink Floyd and stuff like MGMT and The Velvet Underground, but she likes punk and stuff too. We're gonna start out doing covers and then write our own music, so hopefully we take off and end up getting gigs.

>>
>>702758787
If I listened to it enough and practices enough I feel like I may be able to. You're really good man!
>>
>>702758759
I actually meant to say 5Bs, whoops. I'll have to try 7As sometime. My tips are to always use wrist, practice anything difficult slowly then work up in tempo. Practice whenever you can, learn practice drills like paradiddles and such. Also use a metronome for anything difficult.
>>
Rush is a pretty sweet band overall so Peart has a cool spotlight with all of those percussion instruments. However, I've been really getting into Jojo Mayer and Benny Greb. Their techniques are very useful in creative and strict styles. Right now I'm practicing finger techniques to really speed up those single strokes. Also, check Mike Johnston!

I'm a vocalist in a metalband though xD..

I envy you bruh. I was the bassist for a little garage band a few friends and I made one summer in highschool. We jammed to Rush, Nirvana, Black Keys, Silversun Pickups, Foo Fighters, anything I could quickly pick up on Songsterr since the guitarist and drummer were like legit masters.
It was crazy, we each had girlfriends that would chill upstairs in my garage and listen to us play. We all loved the same music and we got to play play since my mom was storing her friend's drumming equipment in our garage while they were moving.
Hold onto what you have man, that's fucking awesome.

>My questions
Do you play any other percussion instruments and do you plan to pursue an education in music?

>>702759216

>>702759257
That's awesome! Currently I'm a senior in high school and I'm still in band lol. I can play mallets, crash cymbals, suspended cymbal, various drums, timpani, basically most percussion instruments. I either wanna go to school for art or be a drummer in a band.
>>
>>702759280
Damn, well if you have any suggestions throw them out!

Another drummer here. Started playing when I was 12 now I'm 35. Currently use Roland V drum kit and absolutely love it. Play mostly metal, but enjoy a lot of other stuff also. Big fan of Danny Carrey, Thomas Haake, Tony Royster Jr.

Brilliant. Well listen, I'm almost finishing up my associates for a theatre. College and life outside of highschool can be very, very challenging. So I don't know if you know but if you find yourself in a musical pickle just go to any music store and ask around about bulletin boards for bands. Bands and musicians in need of members will make posters and post them up, I just found out about this not too long ago.

Get in good with any professors or teachers that you can and if you can get yourself any auditions for scholarships you need to take them. And own your education. The stuff is completely worth it.
>>
>>702759905
Thanks man, really appreciate you looking out for musicians. Don't really think the band thing will fall through but everyone except the bassist seems committed. I'd rather not be a starving, abstract artist lol, but we'll see where I go.
>>
>>702759741
Heh yea I don't play as much as a would like to (married, job, house, blah blah) but Ive done the whole band, playing gigs and parties. Always fun to jam out when I can. I'm happy to see how far electronic kits have come, always been a fan since I can remember but they never felt the same as real drum heads. Roland nailed it with there V drums though. Now I don't have to annoy the neighborhood if I don't want to.
Forgot to give mention to the Rev. That dude came up with some amazing beats and fills. One of the greats for sure.

I get you, part of me wants an electric drumset just for less noise but a good one that replicates the feel of a drumhead would probably be loads of money.

You'll probably have to browse a little, or give it some time. A lot of bands like to play at bars so there's typically an age requirement.
And always have a plan to keep your drums somewhere if you ever need to move.
I had this friend who spent his entire life since infancy playing drums since his father was a marching band and band instructor. But the friend of mine never mentioned once playing in a rock band despite his amazing fucking musical taste. He would go into a fucking trance just diddling away on those drum pads, staring at his ceiling.
You drummers can be fucking weird man.

Do you ever listen or play along to blues and jazz, or any other foreign style?
>>
>>702760677
I got about $2k into it. That includes a DW3000 double kick and ROC n SOC throne. Not to bad all in all.
>>
>>702750387
Du you zuck da benis?
>>
>>702760821
Yea, we're all still 17 and wouldn't be able to play at bars most likely. I have some friends that are in a band and have gotten big playing at various places. Madison, Wisconsin is a big music city and I live close so we could find opportunities there probably. My friends think it's funny when I play cause I just stare into space but still playing stuff like Basket Case or Show Me How To Live or Killing In The Name. I enjoy listening to blues and jazz but was never into playing it. I tried jazz band one year and didn't enjoy it. We play Rock in pep band and it's great. Otherwise I don't really play any other foreign style.

I really like this. I could see this stuff on an album cover. Until someone snaps a picture of you doing something totally embarrassing and it gets voted instead.

Have you played drums with Guitar Hero or Rock Band? How well did you feel they translated the real thing to a game like experience?

>>702766412

How can you tell the drum riser on stage is level?
>>
>>702766531
I never played them that much, I'm actually really good at guitar on Guitar Hero, I have 1-3 on the original block PS2. I feel like they could be better but they did an okay job for just playing a fun game.

I don't know how to give you assurance, but I could play Longview and Schism while blindfolded. And I can play bass with my dick.
So I'm not totally useless.
I don't have any fucking pictures of me playing bass though. I'm kinda disappointed.

lol are you copy pasta too, drool from both sides of mouth?
>>
>>702766531
Honesty it works better than the other instruments. Helps with timing.
>>
>>702766699
You got it! No copy paste though. I just don't know a lot of drummer jokes.

Can you play a circular drum set like Neil Peart?
>>
>>702767098
Maybe if I practiced on one I would be able to after awhile. That would be quite the experience.
