>>702751855 I think my favorite drummer is probably Joey Jordison just because I grew up listening to Slipknot and he was always a big inspiration. I think overall the most talented drummer in my eyes is Neil Peart, but that's all my opinion, I'm not saying he IS, just in my eyes as a drummer he is.
>>702752075 Same fag.... Slipknot is a great band.. while i'm not entirely into that form/genre, i respect going with what you love.. and even better... you picked Neil Peart.. whom I also list as my top drummer. That carousel drum set he played just put him over the top.
>>702752464 Thanks man, I've always loved Slipknot and whenever I say they're my favorite band I always wait to get bashed with "edgy" and shit. It really impresses me that Neil Peart still plays at this age and can play well despite his shoulder and wrist problems I've heard about.
Some of the best drummers are these studio guys that play on pop songs and R&B shit. Not dudes like Joey Jordison. Peart is fine but anybody who plays progressive rock like that always has the freedom to just go crazy so people think they are better than they are.
Always been a fan of Stanton Moore just because of his creativity.
>>702753147 I totally agree with this man, I don't really listen to R&B that much so I don't know much about the drummers behind the beats but they are great musicians that deserve more publicity for their work.
>>702753948 Funny you say that, currently my friends and I are making a band and they are actually learning bass and guitar while I have played drums for 8 years. But my bass friend has had a share of girlfriends. Guitar friend doesn't see need for them. I've been talking to a girl for a while and she plays guitar and is joining us now.
>>702754509 Well any band that has 2 members that are just starting to learn their instruments will be bad at the beginning. Just because they are just learning doesn't mean they will suck forever. Everyone needs to start somewhere man.
>>702756512 That's a good question. I can never truly answer because I never know. I auditioned for percussion in 5th grade for middle school band and played through high school. My cousin give me pieces of 2 drum sets in sophomore year and I played on that and practiced. I also joined pep band and played drums in that. I guess I saw interest in drums around 4th grade cause I thought it was reall interesting.
>>702756906 We all have the same interest in music which is a mix of rock, punk, grunge, alternative, that sort of stuff. The girl I've been talking to who is joining likes a lot of 70s stuff like Pink Floyd and stuff like MGMT and The Velvet Underground, but she likes punk and stuff too. We're gonna start out doing covers and then write our own music, so hopefully we take off and end up getting gigs.
>>702758379 When I got my drum set pieces from my cousin he gave me a bunch of sticks which are all Travid Barker Artist Series Avedis Zildjian 5As and I love them. Good weight and length, had a pair last for 3 years before one split after the amount of splintering.
>>702758759 I actually meant to say 5Bs, whoops. I'll have to try 7As sometime. My tips are to always use wrist, practice anything difficult slowly then work up in tempo. Practice whenever you can, learn practice drills like paradiddles and such. Also use a metronome for anything difficult.
Rush is a pretty sweet band overall so Peart has a cool spotlight with all of those percussion instruments. However, I've been really getting into Jojo Mayer and Benny Greb. Their techniques are very useful in creative and strict styles. Right now I'm practicing finger techniques to really speed up those single strokes. Also, check Mike Johnston!
I envy you bruh. I was the bassist for a little garage band a few friends and I made one summer in highschool. We jammed to Rush, Nirvana, Black Keys, Silversun Pickups, Foo Fighters, anything I could quickly pick up on Songsterr since the guitarist and drummer were like legit masters. It was crazy, we each had girlfriends that would chill upstairs in my garage and listen to us play. We all loved the same music and we got to play play since my mom was storing her friend's drumming equipment in our garage while they were moving. Hold onto what you have man, that's fucking awesome.
>My questions Do you play any other percussion instruments and do you plan to pursue an education in music?
>>702759257 That's awesome! Currently I'm a senior in high school and I'm still in band lol. I can play mallets, crash cymbals, suspended cymbal, various drums, timpani, basically most percussion instruments. I either wanna go to school for art or be a drummer in a band.
Another drummer here. Started playing when I was 12 now I'm 35. Currently use Roland V drum kit and absolutely love it. Play mostly metal, but enjoy a lot of other stuff also. Big fan of Danny Carrey, Thomas Haake, Tony Royster Jr.
>>702759459 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG8fugqFn9Q Brilliant. Well listen, I'm almost finishing up my associates for a theatre. College and life outside of highschool can be very, very challenging. So I don't know if you know but if you find yourself in a musical pickle just go to any music store and ask around about bulletin boards for bands. Bands and musicians in need of members will make posters and post them up, I just found out about this not too long ago.
Get in good with any professors or teachers that you can and if you can get yourself any auditions for scholarships you need to take them. And own your education. The stuff is completely worth it.
>>702759905 Thanks man, really appreciate you looking out for musicians. Don't really think the band thing will fall through but everyone except the bassist seems committed. I'd rather not be a starving, abstract artist lol, but we'll see where I go.
>>702759741 Heh yea I don't play as much as a would like to (married, job, house, blah blah) but Ive done the whole band, playing gigs and parties. Always fun to jam out when I can. I'm happy to see how far electronic kits have come, always been a fan since I can remember but they never felt the same as real drum heads. Roland nailed it with there V drums though. Now I don't have to annoy the neighborhood if I don't want to. Forgot to give mention to the Rev. That dude came up with some amazing beats and fills. One of the greats for sure.
>>702760124 You'll probably have to browse a little, or give it some time. A lot of bands like to play at bars so there's typically an age requirement. And always have a plan to keep your drums somewhere if you ever need to move. I had this friend who spent his entire life since infancy playing drums since his father was a marching band and band instructor. But the friend of mine never mentioned once playing in a rock band despite his amazing fucking musical taste. He would go into a fucking trance just diddling away on those drum pads, staring at his ceiling. You drummers can be fucking weird man.
Do you ever listen or play along to blues and jazz, or any other foreign style?
>>702760821 Yea, we're all still 17 and wouldn't be able to play at bars most likely. I have some friends that are in a band and have gotten big playing at various places. Madison, Wisconsin is a big music city and I live close so we could find opportunities there probably. My friends think it's funny when I play cause I just stare into space but still playing stuff like Basket Case or Show Me How To Live or Killing In The Name. I enjoy listening to blues and jazz but was never into playing it. I tried jazz band one year and didn't enjoy it. We play Rock in pep band and it's great. Otherwise I don't really play any other foreign style.
>>702761079 That's pretty decent, I'm just a high school student and got my first job last month, doing part time at Walgreens so that would be a few pay checks before I could get one if I wanted to. I'm focusing on new cymbals currently.
>>702761397 He's pretty good, but since I've never been into the stuff he does I wouldn't rank him in MY top 5, just cause he isn't someone who inspired me. But he is an impressive drummer nonetheless.
>>702761397 Nice, don't skimp on cymbals. All you really need are hats, crash and ride. Zildjian are my preferred choice. Don't waste money on boom stands right now either. Try to find something used to get you by. Imo.
It's not replying to anything really. You need to watch Sound City if you haven't. Here's an email address. https://plus.google.com/u/1/105138771931326069049 Maybe I can email you some samples someday. I'm turning into that aforementioned 'abstract artist'.
>>702761921 When my cousin gave me the drumset I got a 20" zildjian crash, now has a peice missing and cracking at bell (top priority right now), highhat is zildjian as well, 14", ride is zildjian A sweet ride, will never die and love that thing, the regular old Zildjian oriental China, has 3 pieces missing and gonna get a new one, a 19" crash with tons of cracks in it, keeping it on my kit just cause I like the trashy sound.
>>702762237 Not OP here, but i can drum as good as any drummer i know, just because i can't sit still and i always drum on my legs, tables, etc. Honestly you could learn how to drum with nothing at all.
>>702762437 OP here, my cousin gave me a floor tom, a tom, and a bass drum and that was it in the beginning, I had a snare from a set we had to buy for school to practice. I played on those toms and a snare from 4th grade to sophomore year until he gave me the other pieces. I'm a fairly good drummer, so I guess no, you don't need a real drumset to be a great drummer.>>702762237
>>702763732 I definitely wish i was better but my older brother is an amazing drummer already with a lot of equipment and when him, my dad and i jam im always on piano because were both stronger on those instruments than the other. Also i live in an upstairs apartment and dont want to be an asshole with a drumset lol
>>702764364 Probably because you've practiceed on those more. Just takes time, dedication and always try to push yourself to be better. Fuck, just doing rolls on a snare (though boring and annoying to everyone in the house) will make you better.
>>702766531 I never played them that much, I'm actually really good at guitar on Guitar Hero, I have 1-3 on the original block PS2. I feel like they could be better but they did an okay job for just playing a fun game.
>>702766156 I don't know how to give you assurance, but I could play Longview and Schism while blindfolded. And I can play bass with my dick. So I'm not totally useless. I don't have any fucking pictures of me playing bass though. I'm kinda disappointed.
