I guess it would depend on the country/state. I know a lot of guys who want to become cops and are actively in the process of attempting. Most of them aren't very smart but they're all stand up guys.
For the most part I think the desensitizing nature of being exposed to the depravity of criminals is what leads to the illusion that cops are authoritarian megalomaniacs.

A cosmetologist is also allowed to jump right in on their own, while a rookie cop has direct guidance from vets.

Ok, then let me give you a non-simplistic answer:
Ask yourself: "What does a cop do?" The answer is: "He roams a place he's told to, hands out papers to people he's told to, he sometimes even has to chase criminals and in the worst case shoots a person. Also paperwork, LOOOOTS of paperwork." These things don't require a genious, they require people who are emotionally stable and preferrably fit. They do something about the personal fitness of the appliciants, but there is no training to turn an emotional wreck into a good policeman - which is why they don't even try. There's no good point in increasing the time spent in school when they learned everything they need to know.
Technially beeing a cop isn't hard, but it takes a lot of balls and dedication to do, which is why it's not a thing for everyone. Nigs and the media portraying cops as evil opressors doesn't exactly make life easier for them which is why less and less people want to do it.

Many countries military service is longer than six months, and they're still just recruits after they've completed their service, but here we got the US apparently capable of training policemen, which is a very hard job, in that same timeframe. Very impressive US, good thing that hasn't given any form of backlash.
