The story is in their lives. Michael has a bullshit family he deals with, Trevor is fucking crazy but still shows a vast array of feelings, and Franklin is a nigger but Lamar cancels out the nig with a funnier nig so he's aight.
Any story is pointless if you don't care about it, and most stories have meaning if you pay the slightest attention. It's probably the most fleshed out story in gta too.

Old map was more interesting, the new one is way bigger but it's because they added a bunch of copypasted streets and it hasn't got the same feeling. But you can simply avoid wandering around into random streets and it will be okay so it's not that bad so stick to the main roads and you won't get lost.
