To me it's generally a humour/interest thing. It's funny to watch people do stupid things, it's also funny to watch people ragdoll. Let it be the result of an explosion or a car crash.
I find interest in combat footage and wounds because, well. You don't see it much. It's fun to compare movies to real life and videogames, see the differences. I find some of the combat stuff funny as well.
The way arabs hold their AK's up above their heads as if they're firing over a wall when they're actually stood in the open. Seeing weird homemade weapons that make you go 'woah'.
Going back to comparing videogames/movies to actual footage, it's got a lot to do with blood and bullet impacts. Seeing the way dust and dirt gets kicked up by bullets and comparing it to games, it's funny how big the difference is. Same with things like tanks or artillery pieces firing, it can honestly just be a beautiful thing to see because you don't see it anywhere else.
And also back to the wounds thing, you see wounds in movies and games yet again but I never felt they were realistic. I like seeing what wounds look like, getting an idea for what they can actually look like. It's yet again just an other interest thing.
And well, why I'm there laughing at helicopter pilots singing or wondering how games may one day make their effects more realistic, or while I'm watching men ragdoll a cross the sky I may as well look at everything else.

Humans have always been fascinated and curious about morbidity.
In a sense it can be desensitizing to people, and it could be useful in their future.
I have a friend who served in the army, he was watching a street race and there was a crash. The drivers skull was in two parts. My friend held his head together until an ambulance arrived and perhaps saved his life.
Personally I avoid rekt threads as I have seen enough to fill the curiosity and now they just make me feel gross.
