I'm a Wobbly, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. We were founded in 1905 and have a tradition of organizing in places no other union will go. During the Great Depression, for example, so many hobos were Wobblies that if you tried to hop a train, they'd demand to see your union card and pitch you right back off if you couldn't produce one.
And not only don't I make a single penny for my work, I've sunk thousands from my own pocket into renovating our union hall. The IWW has only a single paid member, unlike most other unions, which means are dues are very small and geared to income; dues for most panhandlers and buskers, for example, are about $6 a month -- none of which we keep.

There's a lot of misunderstanding about what a union is. Ultimately it's a group of workers standing together for mutual aid and protection in a way which makes them more powerful than when they are alone. We watch each other's backs on the street, we advocate for each other with police, security guards, hospitals, and government bureaucracy, and where necessary we go head to head with city hall and the business lobby when they try to kick us off our streets.
