This has been a problem with Google for a couple of years now, it seems the puritanical mindset is spreading to their other properties. For years Google allowed you to search for porn so long as safe search was turned off, but two years ago they made 'moderate' search filtering standard, with an even more restrictive option the only alternative. YouTube has been fucking with content creators for some time now. The big one came when they changed their recommendations algorithm, making it so that you get suggested videos based entirely on your search history, rather than the video you're currently watching. That put a lot of monetised channels out of business. This seems like an even more malicious move on their part. It would appear that there are elements who view the free speech revolution the internet has brought as a sort of Pandora's Box that should never have been opened. Most mainstream news sites have taken down comments sections, to the cheers of SJWs and religious wingnuts, but to the consternation of most people.
The really sad thing is that sites like Facebook and YouTube are monopolies at this point. It's hard to imagine challengers coming anywhere close to their numbers any time soon, so they feel empowered to do authoritarian shit like this with impunity.

Thirty years ago someone like Carl Benjamin or Phil Mason would have been stuck writing letters to the editor of small town newspapers. Now there's a video sharing site that allowed content creators to connect with viewers on a purely meritocratic basis. Every time the (((merchants))) on the business end of things decide to fuck with that system, free speech on the site suffers. This is going to make people with popular channels scared to go after controversial subjects. People still share glimpses of their life. That part of youtube didn't go away. I still don't see what was lost. Stuff was added and you don't like the added junk...don't watch the added junk. You can still upload for free a "vlog' or just a funny/entertaining video you took free of charge. All the money did was add incentive for some good content and some shills.
