Probably a mix of things. Generally they are a tool and it stems from farmers and such that always had some around, my grandfather and uncle had them around, I first shot on a farm. As people moved away from this they glorified firearms instead of seeing them as a tool and it took a weird turn. Most of my family are veterans and I have 0 issue with guns, but they were never glorified. My grandfather never spoke a word of them, WWII vet, front lines.
My old man was a marine, he shot a lot growing up, sharpshooter in the military, never had guns in the house when we were kids, still doesn't. He likes a good firearm, but he treats it the same way he treats a nice wrench, the weird glorification seems to stem from a bunch of people who have no real outlet of manliness that used to exist, so they just grab superficial tokens of what they think is manly and latch on.
It is a weird obsession, I have a rifle and pistol, I enjoy shooting but it sucks ass at ranges and I live in a city, so they just sorta sit. I don't glorify them beyond them being kinda fun and a tool, nothing more than anything sitting in my tool box.

The problem isn't the guns, it is the people. I live in Canada and per capita more households here have guns then the states. (Of course the states has more guns but that is obvious considering the population difference) Yet we have very little gun deaths and a minimal amount of mass shootings.
