ITT I'll post quality pics of epic military architecture from back in the days.
Yes, you can see it on the right.
And this one is where part of GoT was filmed.
This one, Predjama, has an very elaborate cave system behind the castle with hidden exits.
This suits the thread, both excellent pic and nice architecture, thanks.
This is also San Leo, but now with some perspective on the size of the cliffs.
kek not far away from me. beautiful one
Detail of the ancient cheval de frise of Dun Aengus. Imagine running through those
Plan of underground structures.
One of those rare threads that makes /b/ worth checking out once in a while... I remember when every other thread was something like this...
The size of the walls of Mehrangarh compared to a touring bus... And the fortress is already on a 100+ meter rock.
I've thought of everything mate. Here you go.
This castle is being built in France at this moment, with medieval tools & techniques, a project that has been running for a couple of years
I'm about three miles from this place
Detail of the giant moat and gate system of Daulatabad >>701686325
Thanks, curating this is probably the only autistic thing in my life.
Hmm for some reason this one always reminds me of Helms deep
You're right, the castle is mostly in ruins but it's on top of that big rocky thingy
There are several flights of stairs going up, through different gates and in tha past, (presumably) also through the mouth of a giant rock lion.
There was a lot more on it, of course.
Believe it or not, I'm starting to run out of material.
Also worth watching:
Thanks for keeping me inspired to post, savebro
India, province Rajahstan. But learn to Google my friend.
this is a very good thread
good job everybody who posted
No - and here's why.
Castillo was started in 1672 and completed in 1679. Minorcans came to Saint Augustine after 1777.
Another angle, with a nice balcony view
Only this one, about the same angle. Google it for more I guess.
You're welcome, I share the fetish
I remember reading that the ruler of Rhodes at the time the original collapsed wanted to rebuild, but never did due to a warning from the oracle at delphi. But according to wikipedia, I think you're referring to this:
"In December 2015, a group of European architects announced plans to build a modern Colossus bestriding two piers at the harbor entrance, despite a preponderance of evidence and scholarly opinion that the original monument could not have stood there. The new statue, 150 metres tall (five times the height of the original) would cost an estimated $283 million, funded by private donations and crowdsourcing. The statue would include a cultural center, a library, an exhibition hall, and a lighthouse, all powered by solar panels."
Could be neat. Doesn't say if the plans were confirmed though.
Yeah they had perserved some of the cool little features. But it's a shame it was pettled as Draculas castle, because it could have been quite serene, if not for the endless hordes of tourists. Myself included, ofcourse
Couldn't have said it better myself. My favourite castles visited so far are the Konigsburg (on Christmas Eve, 1-2 hours before closing time. It's all decorated and everything and even better it's almost deserted) and Mehrangarh
i wish i could get a history boner.
for me it's history sadness, because we can only ever get a glimpse at its former glory. in some parts of the world disrespect for the past has even removed that tiny glimpse. they're still raiding unopened tombs in egypt for a quick buck.
this planet is hopeless.
would not risk my mobile forces against
Everybody always thinks "ancient man" was such an idiot. He wasn't, he was as smart, clever, and creative as us - he just couldn't pull a physics textbook off the shelf.
Also, fa/tg/uy here, this thread is the tits.
For you, OP, Hirosaki Castle in Aomori Prefecture.
Beautiful in cherry blossom festival
Very basically, this. Also cannonballs deflect more easily because of the angles.
Yea about that, see, im just talking out of my ass here. But if you had a battalion of troops sieging a castle, you'd have to zig zag your way through this fucked up marsh filled with god knows what... Just a guess though.
Wondering that this hasn't been posted. Nice thread, OP!
As long as they continue making stuff like this I have no problem with them
It's very cool. The large star forts are designed specifically to fuck you over no matter where you are. You can't hide. You have to swim, row, run or climb in full view of cannons and guns all the time.
Did the wall really work or was it a meme?
I get where you're coming from man, humans can be savages. Great monuments and constructions have already been lost, destroyed either by humans or nature. I agree that what is left should definitely be preserved, and disrespect of the sanctity of such historical sites should not go unnoticed (or unpunished for that matter). However, on the brighter side, I think this anon >>701696339, is correct in his suggestion to live in the moment. You shouldn't let the defacement of historical sites take away the satisfaction of knowing that if you set foot on, say, the acropolis in Athens, you're walking on ground that the great philosophers once stood on, removed only by a relative blink of a few thousand years.
For me the history sadness comes from the fact that history repeats itself, and oftentimes we as a society seem to learn nothing.
To be honest this thing is architecturally and militarily one of the less interesting structures in this thread, since it's relatively new and build for aesthetics only (the Disney castle was inspired by it). But because I'm a nice guy, here's a slightly edited pic to make you cum extra hard.
How do you even build something like this.
Yeah, i get the designing part but the actual construction must be absolutely insane.
Not only do you have to make sure your workers not die, transportation of materials, and making sure they have enough food/water to work.
I would like to say thank you very much OP for giving me the names of these places. As someone who wants to one day travel the entire world this is a wonderful way to grab locations
I'd give some OC of my ex for your troubles but image limit
